I need a RPG

Tabletop preferably. To be honest I’ve been told many times that I should become a DM (GM if you must), and I've read more than a few source books, but have never actually sat down to a good Tabletop RPG. And now I need one, so I’m looking to just join a semi-serious game for a while.

I looking for an RPG group I can join, possibly in the greater Chicagoland Area?

Otherwise does anyone know of a good way/place for Online tabletop based RPG's preferably on the GURPS base with more of a focus on the RP and less on hack and slash?

Finally does anyone know if it is supposed to be "A RPG" or "An RPG" ? "A RPG" is grammatically correct, but it sounds wrong.

I need an RPG too, preferably a RPG-7. I've got some annoying neighbors across the street that could use a good excuse for purchasing a new car if you take my meaning. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

The starwars and forgotten realms are good.But... Just don't get planeshifted *Remebers when a cocky party member got plane shifted from the underdark in Forgotten Realms, to Sigel in Planescape.* Tee hee. Silly man got the DM angry.

You could always try NWN, which is online multiplayer RPG goodness, based on D&D, though I can't say what ver off the top of my head.

NWN eh? Tis the 3rd edition D&D. I myself prefer 2nd edition, which is in games such as the baldur's gate series, and icewind dale. The best edition for pencil and paper is 2nd though, because there is a less chance of a godlike character.

CyberPunk 2020 is the best RPG I've ever played.

Star Wars and DnD are pretty good too, but oh man CyberPunk is god.

Thanks for the ideas. I don’t know about NwN, I have played a little of it, and it seems a bit Hack & Slash. But then again the online community might be working around that. Ideally I would like to join up with a campaign in GURPS using something like the SteamPunk or CyberPunk wordbooks.

Sorry to all of you DnD fans out there, but overall im not to fond of DnD rules. I personally think GURPS is one of the best rule sets out there, simply because it does not focus as much on Combat and allows for ANY RP environment your DM can think of. (If I want Hack and Slash, ill keep playing Gothic 2).

You might try here. It's got some RPG stuff, both modernized and "middle-earth"ized.

I would sincerely recommend NWN as well. Granted, it won't come close to PnP, but then again(IMO), comparing NWN with PnP is like comparing PnP with LARPing. Apples and oranges.

I've been playing multiplayer NWN for a long time now, and I've really been having a ball. If you're with a good DM(team), then things are bloody improved. The ability to really RP your character instead of simply clicking a dialogue window, the things that the DM can do on the fly, and the many options that are suddenly available to solve encounters/problems(I had two characters once escaping a witch/encounter by hiding in a coffin, something that I personally hadn't thought of, but let them continue with it anyway).

One of the downsides for some is, I suppose, the ease of creating areas. Basically, all the areas are tilesets. Hence, most areas will look alike, and it can be pretty tough to build an area to look the way you want it. With the right placeables and lightning effects, you can do much with areas, but they can still definatley all look the same. On the other hand, the players do not need to download a module to play Multiplayer, only the server needs to have it.

(Maybe Bioware's next game that will ship with a toolset/GM Client, Dragon Age might solve the problems with tilesets.

On the plus side(especially for me, as a DM), it can be easy to create areas. I am absolutley no level editor nor a modeller, I'm a scripter. But thanks to the ease of building, I am able to craft various areas without any problem. Plus, the same ease can be used to create NPCs, armor and weapons. For me, a scripter, it's an excellent solution.

The custom content out there is also bloody good. There are lots of quality modules out there at the Neverwinter Vault, and then there's the free Community Expansion Pack that was released a short while ago. Plus, Bioware is still involved in the community as well, often posting at their official forums, still releasing patches which offer new features, and there's talk about digital distribution as well.

The only problem is finding the right DM/game/group, especially for Europeans. Neverwinterconnections is an excellent site to join a scheduled game, but it's still bloody tough to find a good time.

All in all, my best recommendation would be : Don't expect to play a PnP game via NWN. You'll grow bitter because of it.

(EDIT: Upon closer inspection, you are more interested in tabletop and not quite fond of D&D to begin with. Never mind what I said, ignore.)

Well, You know I'm near Chicago. Mabey we could start up a group. I know a few other people that might be interested.
[edit] - Second Edition D&D rules are much better than 3rd edition, in my opinion.

Cyberpunk 2020 > * :P

DnD and Star Wars get boring fast..

Cyberpunk is where it's at.

DnD - Go to a tavern, do stuff, go to a dungeon kill orcs...go bcak to town, get more jobs.

StarWars - Replace 'Dungeon' with 'hanger', and 'orc' with 'stormtrooper'

Cyberpunk is just so unique. You get a history and a past, charactars are random. You can build your body, attach mechanical things to it. last campaign I was a drug lord. It was fun scoring drug deals. I dunno, cyberpunk just owns.

Vampire: The Masquerade
Play a vampire in modern times, one of thirteen clans or ten bloodlines. It's generally a very political game (or, at least, should be), involving less combat and more using cool powers to screw with people.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse
If D&D were made for the White Wolf system, this would be it. Werewolves are combat monsters - no if's, and's, or but's. A single werewolf can easily tear four or five vampires, limb from limb. You generally play Garou - wolf shapeshifters - fighting an entity known as the Wyrm.

Changeling: The Dreaming[/i]
Play a faerie who has occupied the body of a mortal to survive. The entire purpose of this game is to maintain your child-like innocence (i.e., killing is bad for you). Very fantasy-like, straight out of a children's storybook.

Hunter: The Reckoning
You play a mortal who has been gifted with the ability to perceive supernatural creatures -- mages, werewolves, demons, wraiths, vampires, and changelings. You're out to kill them all and save the world.

I also have Demon: The Fallen and Mage: The Ascension on my shelf, but have yet to page through them. All of these games exist within the same world, written so that you can create a werewolf from Werewolf: The Apocalypse and have it take on vampires from Vampire: The Masquerade, and then throw in a pack of Hunters from Hunter: The Reckoning. There's also Wraith: The Oblivion, but that world was pretty much wiped out and taken over by the demons.

Act fast, though. These started going out of print in January, and they're selling faster than...something...that sells really fast.

d20 Modern[/b]
A very unique spin on D&D: it's D&D in the modern world. Drow and orcs duke it out with dwarves and elves using shotguns, sniper rifles, tanks, Apaches, handguns, grenades, and everything else you can imagine. What's even better with this set of books is that you can use source material from the original D&D and incorporate it seamlessly into your story.

Wheel of Time[/b]
Wouldn't recommend you try this unless everyone in your group is familiar with the book series. I tried it with people who had never read the books, and it was a complete and utter disaster.

Palladium
This is D&D, but written to incorporate a lot more abilities to lighten the load on the GM when the players ask, "What do I have to roll to tumble through the orcs, bowling them over, and wiping out the Queen Orc with a single thrust of my blade?"

Star Wars d6[/b]
Very similar to White Wolf's d10 system. It takes a little bit to get used to, but, overall, it's a great system.

Munchkin d20[/b]
Munchkin: someone who will maximize their character only to be a combat monster. That's what these 3 books, published by Steve Jackson games, are for. A nice little parody of D&D. If you don't go for it, at least get the Dungeon Master's Guide -- some hilarious material in there.

Cyberpunk is 1980s pulp - The Soviets are using weird science to take over the world. The President's retarded, so Devo fans armed with James Bond equipment must stop them on their own while trying to make sense out of the Alzheimer's-riddled mission directives the White House keeps sending them.

It's not tavern proof either. There's the infamous "You get a phone call" opener.
