Best Way to Study for Finals
2004-06-02, 5:40 PM #1
I have finals in two weeks, and I'm trying like hell to study, but I feel like crap, and am damn tired. I have a serious headache after only reading my notes for three hours.

Anyway, how do most of you soldier through studying for finals without going crazy at times. This is of course, for those that do study. Maybe drinks, study habits (Like an hour study --> 15 min break). Just general techniques and the like.

Then again, maybe it's my sheer workload... 22 units of fun fun fun! Immunology, Pathology, Neurology Lecture + Lab, and Molecular Bio. I also have Classic Greece, but that is more or less the most soothing of all of them. We've just finished the exploits of Alexander, and are moving to the lovely succession wars that followed.

I haven't actually tried this, but it seems like it would work well... make haikus out of all the important pieces of information.

I have the ability to soak up info like a sponge (except in math, meaning that I'm totally screwed in that respect) so if i attend all the lectures I should do okay.

When in doubt, I know the ins and outs of scantron machines and how to confuse the machine into ignoring wrong answers. It's not cheating to utilize a weakness in the machine. Cheating is when you copy off of someone else.

I don't to do exams any more (I do get to supervise them though and by golly its fun to watch the stress levels climb)

Study methods: depends what i'm studying for. Chemisrty type stuff usually involves lots of flow diagrams, charts and pictures. Reference ranges was just through repetiton.

For me, I found that the best way to learn was to either teach someone else or at least pretend that I have to explain it to someone.

This one day I went to change my password, but being the clever chappy that I am, I accidently typed the new pw into the e-mail address bar and clicked submit, hence the slightly modified new user name. Go me and my awesome computer skills.

So, who's up for the fun of Cytokines and T cell differentiation?

You're going to get a lot of different ways to study as each oerson has their own way of doing things. I just go over my lecture notes ovr and over and over again, go over any notes I have on any of the readings from the class and that's usually enough for me.

I can't sit for hours on end in the same pace so I'm a big fan of the "study for an hour then take a break" deal

I'm like that too. I found out something rather strange a few years ago. If around the time of the exams I'm not playing alot of computer games, I don't do as well. Maybe because it exercises your concentration or something.. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/confused.gif]

I always studied a little bit of each the week before finals, than just before the test, cram for that test. I made a B on my final for accounting last semester, after bombing the first 2 tests. I crammed for the last 2 before I took it, and made a B on both.

Make notes on your notes in a seperate book/binder to make a sort of bible to that subject as soon as you can. I tend to work best in stints of about 45 mins, with a break for 5 or 10, then a big break every couple of hours.

Oh, remember that a change is as good as a rest, so if you're getting bogged down, don't slack off, change subjects/

Get a good night's sleep before the exam, but get up early and go over your notes (the ones you made at the top of this post) a few times to beat the information into your short term memory, hopefully already having most of it in your long term by now too.

This comes from someone who's just woken up to to a mean hangover because I finished my third year uni exams yesterday morning...

It is possible to study for two hours straights and then take a break. Just punish yourself in someway when you start to procrastinate.

i found that by studying in a group between 2-4 members suited me best(preferably ones that are doing better than you in the class so you can feed off their god like knowledge [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]). What i didn't know i would ask them to show me or explain to me, and what i knew i would explain to them, in this way everyone benefits and your not wasting time going over info you already know if everyone already knows it, and if someone doesn't you can teach it to someone which supposedly the best way to learn something. Hope this helps!

Don't bother. Whatever will be, will be. If you are going to fail, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it, so just relax and take it as it comes.

Yeah, what JDogg said is also good, I taught someone A-level mechanics, and it made me seem to learn it even better...

It's all good!
