The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe
2005-12-09, 1:52 AM #1
Finally, I get to start one of these threads! :D

I just got back from a 12:01 showing of The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe. Actually, we had tickets for a pre-screening at 6:45 pm Thursday but we got about a foot and a half of snow and were unable to make it in time, so we hung around until midnight.

I did read the Narnaia book’s when I was a kid, and I re-Read Lion/Witch/Wardrobe before seeing the movie.

My impression: Overall, very good. They kept relatively close to the book, using a bit of artistic license, but not too bad. I was a bit disturbed by the Battle scene, I felt like they were trying to hard to recreate the battle scenes from The Two Towers, yet they managed to completely omit any and all traces of blood. Still, for what is unquestionably a children’s movie, the battle was a bit too much. Finally, They decided not to use any Narration and to try to tell the entire story on the screen. I would normally respect this decision, but Narnia had a very strong narrative style that I think they would have done well to at least try to replicate.

Finally:
Lucy made the entire movie.

Hmm... Won't hit the theaters before 23rd here in Finland... I might not be able to see it before the year changes. But certainly I will go and see it in a theater.

Good fantasy movies aren't that common, after all.

Edit: Oh, spelling, why did you abandon me...

I just got back from a midnight screening as well, and I didn't care for it that much. The storyline was decent, but the execution was disappointing. While I understand it was a children's movie, I think the movie would have been far better had it not been made by Disney. It also seemed extremely rushed.

I don't think its as much Disney as the director behind the movie... I mean come on, Pirates of the Carribeans was an excellent move and that was created by disney.

People need to stop being label-haters.

No blood?!? Are we trying to teach children that people don't bleed when we cleave them in twain?!?

I just think the movie would have done better as a PG-13. It seemed as if too much was held back for the sake of bringing in a much younger audience. And yes, that kind of a decision would be up to Disney, not the director.

I haven't seen it yet, but it seems to me like half the stuff I see in the commercials weren't in the book. And I read the book a few weeks ago, too.

Wow, just saw it, really enjoyed it. Haven't read the books so I can't make comparisons.
Anyone else laugh their arse off when the queen backhand slaps Edmund? I was waiting so long for someone to do that and judging by the reaction, so had the rest of the audience :D

I'm still wondering if I liked it. The first 20 minutes to me were pretty much "wtf?!" I really loved Mr Tumnus...but, eh, I don't know. I think I was comparing it a lot to the book and was expecting a lot more. The movie to me did seemed rushed and the CGI didn't appear all that great...I was also iffy on the filming. There were some werid shots. Other than that, I liked the actors. I believed they did a great job, and the children were awesome (even though I always pictured Lucy as a blonde.)

Also, did Jadis' costumes bother anyone else? What was she wearing in the battle? ack...I was upset with the actress who did the witch actually. She was nothing like I pictured her. :gbk:

I noticed quite a few shots that were direct mirrors of things from star wars and lord of the rings. For one, when Liam the Lion arrived at the battle, it was VERY close to gandalf's timely arrival at the battle of Helm's Deep.

Chronicles of Narnia man. C.S. Lewis' children's series with ridiculous amounts of Biblical allegory? Have you heard of it?

I haven't seen the new one yet, but from the previews I'm /very/ impressed. Many of the scenes look like they took the old Wonderworks production ones [which I own all of and adore] and brought them up almost verbatim and expanded with modern abilities.

I'm almost certain I remember there being blood [at key points at least] in the Wonderworks ones, but I'd have to go back and re-watch them.

Also, I really wonder how different audiences impressions are from those who have seen the old movies and read the books [grew up with them even], from those who went into it cold.

Sort of like those who watched Serenity without having seen Firefly.

Excited, though.
Also, I can kill you with my brain.

I hadn't read the book in like 15 years, so I remembered very little. But watching it I remembered stuff like "oh yea the lamppost" and the Beavers, and all kinds of things.

But one thing i couldnt remember, at all, was Santa Clause giving them all presents. I mean that WAS Santa Clause, wasnt it?

Narnia would have been better with tanks. And .50 caliber MGs. Actually it wouldn't, but I've always wanted to see some one tear up a large medieval/fantasy army with a .50 caliber MG.

Yes, Santa Clause did give them present's, it was one way of marking that the witch's hold on narnia was coming to an end. Also, in the book Santa stressed that "War's get ugly when women fight in them" and encouraged Susan and Lucy to only use their weapons in dire emergency, Neither of them ever did use their weapons in the book.

Also, Was I the only one who felt that it was a little awkward for them to make the Stone table look allot like Stonehenge ?

Finally, when Mr. Tumnus was playing music for Lucy, The actual music that was played was a traditional Duduk Duet (Armenian Double reeded instrument), yet the pipe flute he was playing it on did not even HAVE a reed.

Okay, I read all but one of the books in elementary school, and have to say I was quite pleased with this new movie. A few others here mentioned how quickly the movie seemed to go by, and I have to agree. The colors were rather reminiscent of a children's movie (very bright, not all that lived in), but they didn't detract at all. The children all did great jobs with the acting, and the effects weren't bad. The battle scenes were pretty fun with all of the different creatures in there, it seems like the books used about every mythological creature and animal you could think of, and the movies reflected that. All in all, the movie was quite enjoyable. It isn't the greateest film ever made, but it is definately worth the price and a few hours of your time.

I thought it was EXCELLENT. The kids did a fantastic job.
I sure picked up a lot more of the biblical references this time around though seeing as how I last read the books in grade 6.

Were there a lot of subtle references like that? Like how at the stone table someone says "Kitty wants some milk?" kinda like how they offered Jesus vinegar when he was on the cross?
That painting was a gift, Todd. I'm taking it with me.

Just saw it last night, and i don;t want to analyze it all but suffice to say i enjoyed it a lot.

And just a quick comment, i may be wrong, i'm i'm pretty sure i saw a reed on that pipe, and it was very obvious,a s in the entire pipe was dark brown and the reed was a light tan.

<&Vinny> I just saw Narnia.
<&Vinny> It was... decent.
<&Vinny> The guys who played Peter and Tumnus were cute
<+Kroko> I wish Narnia had been the next LotR.
<&Vinny> Kroko, me too.
<&Vinny> It was good, but so not quite excellent
<&Vinny> The music was mostly lame, and the special effects pretty much sucked
<&Vinny> But it might be the only movie I've ever seen with amazing child actors
<+tofu> pedo
<&Vinny> what, peter was cute
<&Vinny> Hm, I wonder how old he is
<&Vinny> YES, he's legal. :P

<+tofu> you can't have him anyway
<&Vinny> tofu - but I don't feel dirty thinking about him.

Tumnus was adorable!

Peter, while cute already, is going to grow up to be really hot. He has a Brad Pitt look to him. :em321:

...the guy that played the adult Edmund had a big nose which didn't go with the child actor.
