Does anyone know of a free program that would allow me to perform simple text-formatting operations such as double spacing and simulating page layout?

One time I was on the MS web site, looking for an older version of MS Word that would work with the old DOS help compiler (but I found the updated compiler, which is even better). Anyway, I thought that there were download links to copis of MS Word, but they were all newer editions that wouldn't work with the old compiler, so I got frustrated.

I was just on it again to get the link, but I guess I was mistaken. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

I hate openoffice.org with a passion... get something lightweight like abiword, and use gnumeric for spreadsheets while you're at it.

abiword is full of bugs. The printing doesn't work, it keeps changing the page layout for no reason, and if you try to open big documents, it starts to chug as if you were trying to load a huge 3d game. OpenOffice is slow and bloated but at least it works.

eh, it's not that bad IMO. What do you have against it?

I also use kword a lot, but the kword interface leaves a little to be desired. Openoffice just seems more polished.

Brian: You are right, Abiword is full of bugs. But it is still functional for me. I still appriciate how it is small and lightweight and it's use of GTK2. If the bugs can be ironed out, it will be perfect.

Page: Like Brian said, OO is slow, bloated, and cluttered.

Agreed with Brian. However, I do wish OO.o didn't use its own toolkit. It would rock if it used GTK or QT natively.

I've not had any grief with abiword, but all I use it for (admittedly) is writing the odd essay every now and again.

And I like it's icon [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Koffice and AbiWord both have never worked well for me. KWord puts weird block characters after punctuation, and AbiWord crashes when trying to save. Those are 2 problems that I can't really work around. So... OOo it is.

If you're going to pay a small fee, try TextMaker or Gobe Office.

The benefit of going to UT is getting MS cds for $6 a piece. MS Office 2003 was $12... Windows XP Pro was $6. <3

What does this have to do with this topic? I guess if you were in college (you might be, not sure) you could see if your computer store sells the programs cheap.

I dunno, the recent versions of OpenOffice for Windows have been pretty good. A lot better than the older ones at least. Word is pretty buggy too, a lot of times it likes to do things by itself and stop you from chaning styles and settings. My mom gets pissed at it all the time.
