This game needs more publicity.

http://www.enemyterritory.com/

Enemy Territory was originally concieved as an expansion pack for Return to Castle Wolfenstein. It ended up being released as a free stand alone download and it's unique team based gameplay drew many in (I know some massassians still play it too).

Quake Wars is the "sequel" to the original. Built on the Doom 3 engine it offers epic outdoor environments and so called "realistic shadow and foilage effects." When a player actually goes prone in tall grass or hides in the shadows he becomes very hard to see, despite how the graphics are scaled.

The outdoor maps are also one giant 6gb texture. The so called mega texture is supposedly stored in only 8mb of video memory. The new technology developed by iD and Spalsh Damage means there will be no repeats and no tiling and there will be no distance fog what-so-ever. You'll be able to see clear across the map.

The game will also provide automatic objectives. If a scout spots an enemy base and discovers something that needs to be destroyed other players will automatically be notified. This provides a sense of "working as a team but without all the work." Different classes also have different abilities, the Field Ops can deploy radar relays and AA guns and call in artillary strikes, the Engineer can repair vehicals etc.

Both sides, Strogg and Human, are suppsosed to play vastly different. Rather than each side having a scout unit, a medic unit (see Battlefield 1942) they will have different types of classes. The Strogg also don't have traditional hitpoints and ammo packs. Unlike the human forces they use "Stroyent" which is gathered from dead Human players.

So who will you play as?

I'm kinda xenophobic when it comes to games, so humans it is

Thanks for pointing this out, by the way. It's definitely ranking high on my next purchase list.

I'll play both no doubt. Should keep me occupied for a while. =D Having to learn the same maps twice.

Human.

I don't think my computer would ever be able to run that...
2005-12-10, 2:59 PM #11
Humans, just because the Strogg don't appeal to me.

I loved the original ET back in the day; great objective-based gameplay with classes (reminds me of class-based DM in MotS) and interesting, fun maps. Teamwork was emphasized. Unfortunately, the maps were linear to the max.

I don't know how it's going to be in the new installment. The screenshots are awesome, but how is MP going to be fun when you're high end gaming machine has to play on the low settings. I only have a laptop on campus that allows me to get around and play CS:S at medium settings.
2005-12-10, 3:38 PM #12
They say you can run this at the same settings you can run D3 at.

They made the Quake 3 engine unplayable on my laptop with ET, I'm afraid to see what they do with the Doom 3 engine.

Due to the size of a lot fo the maps I think playing without vehicals would make it pretty boring. As long as infantry have decent anti-armor weaponry it's fine with me.

ET always ran really well for me (I haven't played it in a while).
2005-12-10, 6:17 PM #24
There must be some feature I could turn off to make the game run on my computer, I just havn't found it yet.

I still play ET regularly so this excites me much

Heh, the old family computer at home (it turns 5 on Christmas) matched the minimum specs almost exactly. I have a hard time believing that the Doom 3 engine will run on that... though I *did* have HL2 running on it, that one time.

It's not "because" of anything. The D3 engine here has been "extensively modified" according to Splash Damage to support huge outdoor environments like this.

AMD's, ESPECIALLY AMD 64s are better at gaming than Pentium chips. How the hell is a reccomended a 2.4ghz P4 or a 3000+ AMD64, two very disparate processors.

isn't a 3000 only 2.0 GHz? I think a 400 MHz gap should make up the perforamce difference...

I'll definitely look into this.

1.8GHz in some cases. As AMD has shown time and time again, even huge disparities in clock speeds doesn't mean that they're on the level, or that AMD processors do worse (at least in gaming, for the most part). The 3000+ would, and does still destroy the 2.4 P4
