Good Case for Modding

Well, I'm on the case modding bandwagon. After seeing the HL2 casemod (link on emons thread). I got interested. But Now I need a decent case. I have one I'm going to work on for now, but I need another one for my PC. If you know of any decent ones for under $70. No powersupply needed.

if you're into real case modding, you don't even need a full case, just the chassis. but if not, i'd recommend something cheap.

I've got an old chassis you could have if you sent me a couple of quid or something to cover shipping.

Except that the pieces in that machine suck.

I've seen an AMD64, 9800 pro, 250 GB 7200 RPM HDD mod. Really nice, though it looked cramped.

I would recommend a vanilla case, such as an Antec case. You can get one without a window and add one yourself, or you can get one with a window and come up with some original stuff yourself. What tools do you have? You'll need a Dremel with the proper cutting wheels for most stuff. For large window cuts you'll want a jig saw or a band saw or something.

You may also consider using a milk crate for the chassis of a case. I'm serious. It's rigid and near indestructable, with plenty of places to mount devices. Cover it with some aluminum sheet metal and you have yourself an instant cube. Take a Dremel to the sheet metal so you can access the handles, maybe cut a window or two. See if you can find yourself a black milk crate, so it won't look so damn ugly. Or get another color and use some vinyl dye on it to color it. Get some L channel of aluminum for brackets to mount stuff, and just use large washers to fasen things to the crate or something. I'm thinking about doing it with a older PC or something.

I never understood the concept of case modding. I'd rather use the money on buying better hardware instead of using it to simply make the outer case look good.

True, it may look nicer, but it won't make the computer run any faster.

I agree, kinda. The only case mod I ever tried was painting the side panel with a Union Jack. Horrible and blotchy, but it cost me about three quid, so I can't complain. Admittedly, I bought a Coolermaster Centurion afterwards because the case was pretty knackered anyway.

Tony, could I have a pic of your case.
And like most of you said. I want a plain beige case. Nothing fancy.

Well, modding is useless unless you add MOUNTAINS of fans. I have 9, which allows me to do mad overclocking, which in turn increases performance. We need a "post your pc" thread. I wasted way too much money on case mods, and damnit I want to show them off!

I don't think you really want to read this anyway.

Why even use a case? Leave it open!

Too bad he didn't use an Xbox for that. The Xbox sure has a LOT of room for that plus the NES shouldn't be butchered like that.

Valid points, Pagewizard, a lot of people spend far too much money on case modding. They buy $10 fans and like, $40 window kits. If you know where to shop and know what you're doing, it's very cheap, and a lot of fun. It certainly gets you away from the screen to do some real work.

heh... that NES case is cool, but I gotta wonder how it doesn't overheat being so cramped... I mean I guess it could be done.. I just never thought about that before.

meh... *wanders off in amazement*
