English Oil Refinery 'splodes, we feel the vibes over 50 miles away

Last night was one hell of a night.

Fuel Depot explodes violently

Me and gf felt a sudden shaking of the ground last night at around 6 am, we were in bed, but the walls shook for 2 seconds, and we heard a terrible rumble from outside.

I'm wondering if any other britassians heard or felt the explosion.

Last night, other bad things happened, so I wasnt entirely concerned with the mini-earthquake we felt.

At 11 pm...I had to go to Accident&Emergency at hospital with an attack of migraine.

For those of you who have had experience in Serious Migraines, its very very bad. Sufferers can react differently.

Last night I brought up some of my stomach lining, the pain in my head made me smash my head against a wall, and I started hallucinating from the pain.

A&E couldnt do anything for me :(

we got back at 6 am, and got up at 12 today, I'm still not myself. the last 24 hours were a blur, I apologized to Sam my mate for throwing him off a bridge, only to find out that was a hallucination last night :(

ANYWAY!

the main point I'm making.

KABLAMO!!!! very big explosion, we can still see some dark clouds in the sky.
I think it was at least 20 miles away.

so yeah, wow
Interesting set of events.

Ruthven, aren't you in Guildford? If so my family may have heard it over in Orpington.
Maybe 'splosions carry a long way around London, when the IRA bombed Canary Wharf many of us kids heard the rumble while playing outside and thought it was freak thunder.

I was part of a christmas party last night and was up to till around 4am, I was totally asleep at around 6am as was everyone else in the house so none of us mentioned anything about an explosion or "bang" this morning.

However I did notice the funny looking sky this morning, although its only recently that I've had access to te computer and seen the news, if I hadn't have checked the bbc I probably wouldn't have known about the explosion till someone told me.
People of our generation should not be subjected to mornings.

I didn't hear it, but turned on the news at about 10:30 this morning and seriously thought something truly f***ed up was going on. The size of the explosion (and the ensuing fires) is just astounding. Last figures I heard were 39 injured, 2 serious, which is pretty lucky considering. There are offices a few miles away which would have had huge fatalities just from flying glass if this had happened during the week.

Also mad - this is the second time this week they've had to close part of the M1.

Okay, some pretty incredible pics on the bbc website - including a collapsed building.

You've got to admit. Pollution makes for some crazy sunsets.

I didn't hear it over where I was. It was probably about 70 miles away, I guess.

Jesoos Cristos!

this pic shows how far away I was, and yet we STILL heard the thunder and felt the vibrations.

Yeah, my mother, in Welwyn Garden City about 15 miles away, heard and felt the explosion as well.

This is sad, but those really remind me of the massive clouds of ash that Sauron sends to darken the sky above Minas Tirith in the Return of the King movie.

Really cool pictures Maevie, thanks for posting them.

Wow. I never knew about this until I clicked the thread.

I didn't hear any explosion, not surprising living about 400 miles away though.
nope.
2005-12-11, 12:01 PM #19
Yeah, I didn't hear it either. Which makes sense considering I'm about 6,000 km away.

Any reason why it happened? One simple spark?

But those are spectacular shots. No one died at all from that? Amazing.
