Widescreen vs Fullscreen movies
2005-12-19, 6:53 PM #1
Okay, so me and my dad are having a on-going debate over widescreen vs fullscreen. My dad doesn't like the "black bars" that you see in a widscreen movie. I used to not have a prefrence until i saw a documentary on TCM and it changed the ways i thought about movies forever.

This little Flash documentary shows my exact opinion (Star Wars examples):

Well what are your thoughts? Remember, in a widescreen movie, you are not seeing less, but more.

Fullscreen, because you don't see MUCH more, and I can't stand those bars.
I had a blog. It sucked.

Widescreen, unless there is only a fullscreen copy, but usually then I wait or go to a different store.

Widescreen, because thats the *bleep*ing ratio that you get in a movie theatre so you don't get clipping on important things

Um, widescreen obviously, because that's how the movie was intended to be watched.

Widescreen. There IS NO other choice. Anyone who goes Fullscreen is obviously a fool.

The two people that voted fullscreen should go hang themselves.
Think while it's still legal.

You see twice as much area. What are you on?

Widescreen. Hopefully, all TV's and Monitors will be widescreen eventually anyways.

Widescreen, obviously. Now if only there was a way to watch it at 24 progressive frames per second instead of 30 interlaced...

Fullscreen is for jerks with old TVs. GO GET A NEW TV, N00BS. You can watch regular 4:3 format stuff by stretching it; it looks fine. Or of course you can have bars on the side... but who wants that.

and I just remembered the first movie I remember seeing Widescreen, On Her Magisty's Secret Service (wooh Bond)

Watching movies inthe dark does away with the black bars as well. ;)

Is this a trick question? WIDESCREEN!

I won't throw a fit if it's in fullscreen (:p), but given a choice, widescreen over fullscreen anyday.

I don't have the money to spring for one, and my parents don't give a care.

Phoenix is currently chewing my *** out for going fullscreen. Widescreen is sounding better, but I still like full.

If I'm spending my own money or have any choice in the matter, I'll take widescreen, no question.

I am way to picky about widescreen. If I get a fullscreen movie, even as a gift, or if there was some mix up with the company I ordered the movie from, I won't even go near the movie until I can trade it for widescreen.

WIDESCREEN ALL THE WAY.

As a friend of mine says, if you know anyone who chooses full screen over widescreen ask them for a $5 bill. If they give it to you, tear the sides off and tell them it's full screen formatted.

Except for the fact that most big movies are in theatrical widescreen, 2.35:1, while widescreen TVs are 16:9, or 1.78:1. So there are still going to be bars there in a lot of cases.

Personally, I don't care about bars and such. I enjoy watching movies on my 16:10 monitor a lot, and it of course even has black bars on 16:9 video.

Same here. When I get a DVD as a gift, I am notorious for asking my parents to send the movies back to the store and picking up the widescreen version.

Widescreen, because widescreen is fullscreen for me. (I don't own any 4:3 displays anymore! I'm free!!)

Widescreen all the way.
The only reason to see anything in fullscreen would be if it was originally shot that way (i.e. older TV shows, etc)
Everything is moving towards widescreen anyway.

You don't even get a choice of widescreen/fullscreen DVDs over here in this country like you seem to do in America. Some older flipper-style discs give you both options, but there are very few of them. I'm all for it, 4:3 is obselete and it makes perfect sense to phase it out.

I <3 my widescreen beamer.

Except when there's a widescreen movie in TV, then I get the black bars and a stretched movie. But that will change as soon as I get a TV-card for my computer with which I can cut the bars out.

If a movie is worth anything at all and is shot in widescreen formats, it HAS to be seen widescreen, because the shots are all composed for widescreen. It totally ruins the effect of a shot a lot of the time if it's not widescreen. And it doesn't look as good.
