Aaargh, those things were why I always kept a weapon slot just for a rocket launcher and a few rockets. I especially hated the one that came while you're hang gliding from one side of the river valley to the other... it's like "crap, I'm in a hang glider, and there's a heli shooting at me."

I'm also going to have to second (third?) the vote for Paxton Fettel. Creepy as hell.

And digging back into the past a bit, the Rancor in MoTS is pretty intimidating, especially the first time when you have no weapons and you don't know there's a lightsaber just waiting to be force pulled from behind some bars.

I didn't think they were very intimidating, just hard as hell to beat.
I had a blog. It sucked.

Most intimidating: The Dark Troopers from Dark Forces. I nearly crapped my pants the first time I encountered them. (well, I was 12 at the time, and Dark Forces was the most "realistic" game I had played at that point...)

Runner up: The huge spider thing from the original Half-Life.

The prototype dark trooper was pretty damn scary in DF. It was so sudden, and all like... fast and stuff.

Dark Lich from Secret of Mana.
The whole game just built up to that fight.
Still here.

Those animated statues that are ordered to kill you in Thief 3. I didn't bother sneaking around them, just RUN RUN RUN!

Indeed. They aren't at all like the ents from Middle Earth... they're alarmingly fast!

I don't think the tree beasts were in Thief 1. The only place I remember seeing them was in Thief 2 in the Maw of Chaos. They were also in Thief 3, but they were less scary.

Oh, that's right.

...well I still hate Thief 1. Damn zombies and burricks.

Yeah, damn zombies. I haven't finished a single Thief game. I'd love to, but I'm too damn scared. I got interrupted while playing Shalebridge Cradle and I haven't been able to go back yet. :o

That's why I like Thief 2. There's only one zombie in the game, I think, and the tree-monsters are avoidable, if I remember correctly.

I love fighting him at the bunker. Seriously. GEP, sawed off, regen, tons of enemies, aggresive defense system (For those damn commandoes) and speed aug. Combine these and it's almost like an arcade boss fight in the open area.

Those statues and the creepy Sith zombies in MotS.

Oh and the swamp wampas.
2005-12-21, 7:43 PM #73
Oh man, those were scary. I didn't finish the game when I was younger because i was scared of them.

Scarier than Walton Simons or Bob Page, was that full grown Karkian right around the corner near the cavern where you fight Simons. You round the corner and think "What is THAT thing?!". And then you pray it didn't notice you.

You know, I've tried getting the Karkian to eat Simons, but I can't remember if it ever worked.

However... maybe not incredibly intimidating, but hellacious cool.

They really worked on the Cradle...

Turn your brightness down till you actually can't see in the dark... Makes it more realistic. You also can't see whats in those really dark places...

You shouldn't worry about the Cradle, there's not a living soul anywhere in it, save you.
