Im writing an essay and im using one of Martin Luther's theses. I dont understand this, but I'll greatly appreciate anyone who will explain it to me.

"...which outlined his theological argument against the use of indulgences, were based on the notion that Christianity is fundamentally a phenomenon of the inner world of human beings and had little or nothing to do with the outer world, such as temporal punishments."

I got this paragraph from this site:

Well, Martin Luther was mad at the Catholic Church because the priests were selling indulgences, which were essentially pardons for your sins that allow you to get to Heaven sooner. It was originally that to get an indulgence, you would have to do some sort of religious work or something of that kind, but the practice became corrupted.

Martin Luther didn't want to break away from the Church, just to reform it, but ultimately he did break from the Church, and his followers became Lutherans.

Perhaps he felt that indulgences (a physical thing, be it a work or the corrupted monetary offering) had nothing to do with the spiritual, ie: "faith not works."

The entire practice having to do with doing an act and, at the time of corruption, no spiritual faith at work.

It seems to be about faith over works, faith being the "internal world," and the temporal being the works that he felt had no connection.

I think Luther was entirely wrong, but hope it helps with your essay.

I thought he pissed off the Catholic Church by defacing one of their doors.

The 99 Theses. (Was it 99?) I think it was just something he nailed to a door. Not really defacing.
