Yep, heard about this... I bet sales of that "how to survive a robot attack" book are booming right now, hah.

The human race is doomed. Well, not really. That robot looks pretty harmless. Maybe it'll decide to overthrow us by bumping into our legs incessantly and beeping.

How do you know? Did you ask it? Is *ANYONE* really self-aware?

I think that not only is it self-aware, but it also has a soul. So when it get's deactivated it goes to robot heaven.

That's not self awareness, that's just a program. Self awareness, in the context of sentience, intelligence, etc., must come about through learning. It can't just be programmed in. And before someone says something dumb, computers CAN learn, only in a limited fasion at the moment. Any PDA that recognizes your handwriting can learn. Over time it adapts to your handwriting style to make it easier to recognize characters. That's a simple example.

Next thing you know... some scientist will think the robot needs to be put in stasis for 30 years to make certain the robot doesn't become evil... then 100 years later... another scientist discovers the robot and makes duplicates of it calling them "reploids"... then next you know, a virus breaks out and turns some of them into "mavericks"... then next ya know...

(Anyone who can figure out what I'm saying gets a cookie)

Of course, one can now start debating wether recognising yourself equals full self-awareness. If it starts blinking several leds for no apparent reason as it's going through a row of existentional reasoning/angsting, then I'll admit it's fully self-aware. XD
