Problem with CPU in new computer
2004-06-05, 6:51 AM #1
OK, heres the summary. Just rebuilt my computer and reformatted & reinstalled Windows 2000. Now I have a Athlon XP 2100+ processor, however when I boot up it says I'm running a Athlon XP 1500. I then go into BIOS and change my CPU speed from 100MHz to 133MHz. I save changes and reboot. Now it says I'm running a Athlon XP 2100+, okay good. However when it goes to load Windows I get a blue screen with some error. I reboot and it's still there, which only leaves me to go back into BIOS and change my CPU speed to 100MHz. Any help is appreciated.

Is it running at 1.733ghz? Cos that's how fast an Athlon 2100 should run.

Well, then the easiest way to attempt to fix it would be simply reinstall Windows while you have it running at the correct frequency.

For some reason or another(though it doesn't make much sense) since you installed Windows while it was clocked lower, it may not like the increase. There are those times when even the slightest hardware related changes makes Windows fussy, especially NT based.

Just curious, but from reinstalling Windows the first time, everytime I start up it asks me which OS I would like to use, and it has two copies of Windows 2000 listed. How would I uninstall/remove from the list the non-working copy of Windows? After installing it for a third time at the correct frequency, I don't want 3 copies of Windows showing up to choose from.

Very true--also make sure you aren't using too much power that your Motherboard or PSU can't handle it--that can cause instability majorly. 133 sounds right, and even as an overclock it shouldn't be that stressful... What kind of cooling do you have?

You must not have had it delete the old Windows partition then. When you go to reinstall it again, make sure to delete any existing Windows partitions it has on it.

How do I do that?

Whenever you boot from the CD to reinstall Windows, it should at some point ask about formatting and partitioning. When it asks what partition you want it installed on, it should list all the partitions on your system and give you options to delete them. So wipe all of those old partitions(unless you have one with something you want to keep), and let it make a new one to install it on.

It's been a few months since I last installed Windows 2000, so I can't remember exactly how the partition manager is set up, but I know it's pretty straightforward.

OK I set the CPU speed to 133MHz. Now whenever I go to reinstall windows the computer just turns itself off. I hate computers.

Why did you register?

Jasc--I honestly don't know what your problem is, but I think it's cooling. What kind of cooling do you have? (BTW, everything you said sounds like a symptom of poor cooling)

Yeah, if it's shutting itself off cooling was the first thing that came to mind for me, too.

Are you sure your heatsink is installed correctly? Did you do it yourself? Get someone else who knows about computer hardware to have a look at it for you. Make sure that sucker is bolted on there properly and is making complete contact with the CPU core.

Also make sure there's not a massive layer thermal paste under it. Less is more with thermal paste.

I had this error before. It has to do with the FSB setting and a jumper in the motherboard. Make sure you set it to the FSB setting of you CPU (Ex. if it is running at 333, set the settings to 166). See your motherboard manual for details on setting the jumper and the BIOS.

The C:\boot.ini is what you need to look at.

If the new boot.ini that was created with the latest installation detects multiple installations then chances are there are remnants of them still sitting around. Taking it out of boot.ini will get rid of the NT boot loader prompt, sure, but you'll still have old installations sitting on the drive wasting space.
