12 Miners alive, oops, I mean they're dead
2006-01-04, 11:03 AM #1
Late last night rescue crews reached the bodies of the West Virginia miners trapped underground after a methane explosion. The news initially reported that there were 12 survivors and 1 death, but that was a miscommunication. Three hours later, the reality was revealed that only 1 survived. Full story here.

I can't even imagine what pain it must feel to first be told that a miracle happened and then have the truth snatch it away. God help them.

I think the real question is why they waited 2 days to go down and get them. "There was poisonous gases down thar!" is NOT an answere. It's why we have suits for going to the depths of the seas. Hell, some guy could have strapped on a tank, and wheelbarreled 5 or 10 tanks the 4 miles of the mine, knocked on the door of the baracaded men, handed them gas masks, and walked them back up.

I may not know the entire logistics about the situation, but I'd hope that there was some other magical force like zombies or aids that stopped them from doing this, because I honestly don't see why 12 people died a couple miles below earth due to some bad gas. I really don't understand.

And WHY do you send a ****ing ROBOT down!? Is the robot going to perform CPR on the 12 miners? WTF.

Don't you think if it was that easy they would have done it? Jesus Christ people are stupid.

They didn't know if they were alive, they didn't know where they were, and they didn't know what the situation was down there. Coal mines are dangerous. They didn't want to risk more lives by sending a rescue team before they knew what they were dealing with.

Otherwise, I do agree that it just seems like they could have done more.

I get that they didn't understand how it was down there, but you have to realize mines aren't ANYTHING like they used to be. The iron range, which I live on, isn't called the iron range for anything. You can walk clear into the base of it, a civilian, without any danger. I've been in SEVERAL. Especially ones with the bus-trains that this mine has. I also have a friend who's actually WORKED at the mine in question. It's NOT an instable danger zone. It's a VERY well constructed TUNNEL, rather than a CAVE. Furthermore, they said the first day that there WERE No explosions or dangerous caving issues in the cave. Sure, they didn't know where they were, and sure the mine was highly explosive at the moment. HOWEVER, walking the whole 4 miles of the mine looking for 12 people that KNOW where to go in this situation [one of the baracadable areas]... I'm still not totally convinced peoples lives would have been in danger had they gone down.

(Coal is combustible)

not to mention that a mine that has ALREADY collapsed once, would not be stable.
Moo.

But IT didn't collapse, a different connected shaft did. Totally different thing. It happens here all the time. They evac the mine and then go back down and test for weak spots. They see if it effected the other shaft, which it almost always doesn't. Should the rescuers take SOME sort of risk?

Perhaps in these two days you have free, you can read our stickies about bashing people like this.
