I once did stuff like that when I was 16.... , but I went one better.

I got a long bar of iron, and wrapped coils around it with copper wire.
then I folded a sheet of aluminum[usa sp.] around the electromagnet, with a sheet of thick big bag material seperating the foil from the iron.

then I took apart my lamp, attached it to the + and - and switched on the mains
{warning, hazardous durrhh}

I cant remember exactly what we all saw, but something hot wizzed past my brothers ear (metal?) and some huge orange glow came off the side of the magnet and burnt the radiator paint from the centre.

And that, my friends, is the closest I have ever come to make a real life staff weapon :-D

erm, a staff weapon design is almost impossible to make unless u work for the Pentagon's uber weapons project.

Just extract the capacitor from that camera, and about 19 others, and construct your own circuit to discharge it through the prongs.
