I remember seeing that a few years back. If I'm not mistaken, it's real.

God that was stupid.

Oh yeah, language warning.

Aye, I watched it the night it aired: I love Derren Brown.

that cant be real. no way. people don't get "catatonically" hypnotized by a few "well-placed" flashes on a screen.

Ah, you see it that way. I just thought it was fake because my profs really hammered the 'informed consent' principle in. You can't just pick up a dude on the street and put him through some ethically objectionable practices like these. Even IF it works (which I doubt), you need to sign forms, etc... beforehand. Still entertaining as hell though.

I hate the guy, but that's real.

The idea is that the person subject to it doesn't know, but their friends find out everything. And it's quite disturbing.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

I'm sure you don't. I think they only need to agree for it to be aired once it's been done.

I think the consent aspect is more of an ethical issue than a legal one.
2006-01-07, 7:44 AM #10
To be honest, I wasn't to keen on that one, but the other (simpler) stuff Derren does is fer more entertaining to me: the less 'showy' it is, the better it tends to be.

Exactly, at least with those you can sometimes pick out what he did before he explains it.
The one where he convinces this guy to bring a random object from the supermarket and predicts the guy was going to bring back vinegar, was quite a simple example. During his pre-amble he was talking about the variety of stock there and talked about crisp flavours, listing a few before he trailed off. So he said something like "there's cheese and onion, smoky bacon, prawn cocktail, salt and... whatever" but it just sounded like he'd forgotten the name. So the guy wanders around the supermarket with the word "vinegar" fresh in his memory while trying to find something obscure to throw off Brown's prediction.

That sounds really implausible. You can just **** up a random unsuspecting guys brain, but you can't publish the footage if he doesn't want to? The guy had to be in the know from the beginning.

Bloody unbelieveable. And way too dangereous. You never know how a person reacts. He could've had a heart attack, or shot himself in the eye, or something.

The gun just shot caps. The zombies could fire their own chest-bullets with a simple trigger. I only slightly question the actual method of "hyptnotizing" him, as the rest seems VERY plausable.

I'd be worried the stranger they picked up would actually have a gun or something on them.

This has been posted before and there was a massive debate about it very similar to this one :p

I'm pretty sure the informed consent thing is an actual law, a human rights thing.

-It came from the human experimentation laws passed after Nuremberg, I think.

Not many people in England go down the pub with the intention of having a few quiet pints with their mates with a gun in their pocket kirbs ;)

If he'd been told what they were planning on doing, there wouldn't any longer be a point in doing it.

Exactly my point. That's why I think it was an actor. I don't think you can do this to uninformed bystanders.

JKWhoSaysNi, no I haven't heard about that show. I'd love to hear about it though.

I had my doubts about this one of his, that's why I prefer the littler things he does, like convincing people that betting slips that have lost are winners, and taking money from them.

Heehee.
