Stuff you've salvaged (or wanted to)

The salvaged-Jabba thread gave me an idea.

Post good/interesting stuff you've found that you've been able to salvage from the side of the road, trash, or wherever. Or, list stuff you wanted to take but couldn't.

Me:

I once found a VERY nice oak TV cabinet by the side of the road, it just needed to be sanded and refinished, which I would be more than happy to do since I was planning on keeping it for myself. (the glass doors on it weren't even broken) I would have taken it except I was alone and couldn't lift it (oak furniture is heavy) and my car was nowhere big enough to accomodate it.
Where is the gravity gun when you need it? :gbk:

I can remember salvaging more than a few bike frames from the trash when I was a kid.

Best price. :D

I'd love to find some power tools..my uncle found a chainsaw - he watched it fall off the back of a pickup that was going way too fast. Filed a report with the PD, and nobody has claimed it yet..

Drive around near construction sites.

Dewalt batteries and power tools aplenty.

And most of the time they don't want them back.

A policeman's flashlight. You know, the ones that could probably /start/ fires they're so bright.

I almost scored a fireman's suit in the same run, but decided that he'd probably get in pretty huge trouble if that was gone when they came looking for it (It fell off the back of a firetruck, I'm pretty sure) so we decided to put the suit back.

But the flashlight is MINE.

Our school had a HUGE pile of old computers sitting outside, about 30. I opened up every single one and made off with the cooling fans, various other parts, and the high-insulation flyback wire attached to the monitor which I use for the cannons I build as a hobby.

Errr... unless its some huge construction company, they really DO care. My uncle is in construction, and this is his absolute #1 thing that pisses him off: people stealing his tools.

They look pretty chewed up most of the time.

But they still work. And I still use them.

Not sure this counts as salvaging, but my girlfriend bought a $900 LaCie 1 TB external hard drive for $90 from a store that had omitted a zero from the price tag. Sold it on eBay for $750 or so. Her brother bought 5 of those and sold each for a similar price. The stupid store sold out the hard drives before they realized their mistake, but it was too late, they went out of business.

I found a wad of money on the ground which prompted me to say "oh hey, money!"

And at the same time an MP saw me. So he told me to hang on to it, and if the person who owned it came back, he would send them to me.

bout 5 min later I had to hand over the money :(

I found loads of butane gas near a construction site once, we figured they must've been old cans they'd dumped in the stream (I take shortcuts to places in my village via them). You find loads of neat stuff near streams. Loads of wood, crates, tools... whatever. Best thing I ever found was a pitchfork. It's in my shed now. :)

Also found some nails for nailguns, stuff like that. The builders in my area not only are building developments our village don't want, but they dump things in the scenery. I don't care if they wanted it, the people who move into our village are always bad news. The harder it is for them to build, the better.

Found a (roughly) 27 to 32in tv in the dumpster outside my apartment. I was gonna go back for it, but they collected the trash before I had time. Probably wouldn't have worked anyway.

Seriously, what's the point of waiting to see if people claim money? The line of people who claim it would probably be a mile long even if its only a dollar.

Well, I doubt the police department would have a public sign saying "Wad of Money Found!" I don't think many people would go to the place and claim they lost money when they never did. (I could be wrong)

A friend of mine found a bag of dead cats in the Ohio River. I assume they were not dead when introduced to the river, and there-after became so.

Man, I wish I could find a LiveJournal post I stumbled on through a forum a few years back, Someone found a box of rejected vampire teeth that had the fangs pointing outwards instead of down. Just a box of about 150 on the side of the highway.
