Do you believe reality TV?
2006-01-10, 12:28 PM #1
A lot of the telivision shows today (in the US at least) are based on real-life situations, but does anybody actually believe this stuff? I'm talking mainly about shows like the Apprentice. So do you believe what you see, or is it all scripted?

Personnally, I don't believe it. I think reality TV shows are more appealing because viewers think something is really happening, and I think everything on these shows is planned out if not scripted.

I was renting a movie yesterday, and the woman working in the store was watching the worst of American Idol tryouts or something. Simon Cowell was ripping into these wannabes for being as bad as they were. It's almost funny because you're supposed to believe that's what he really thinks and that he would actually say that. And also because the other person was so bad, that to try out they deserved it.

But they can't use that without the person's consent, right? And since they are profitting from this, is it too hard to believe that they would at least go out of their way to film these?

I'm guessing some are more real than others. I don't know whether I believe in them or not, but i can say one thing, its not something that interests me at all.

I'm not really that interested either, I'm just curious as to why people find reality tv more entertaining.

I think this is like professional wrestling, when the question seems to be "Is it real?"

But the real question is, "does it matter?".

Well some of the shows where you see people swearing excessively, and arguing, basically going nuts... you tend to wonder if anyone would REALLY do that on national TV. I know I wouldn't start arguing and swearing my head off at someone on TV.

Some seem more genuine than others, it depends.

Depends what kind of show.
nope.

They're like normal shows with bad acting and no plot. Why would I want to spend and hour listening to idiotic campers gripe about their equally idiotic comrades.

I trust shows like Amazing Race.

They're real, but they are so heavily edited that they can appear to be scripted.

I tend to think that varies quite a lot from show to show, and Avenger's point just adds to the confusion.

But what would I know in the end, because I hate reality TV with passion, and I have only watched it by accident or when I have visited somebody watching that ****.

My guess is that they sign a release form giving the network rights to whatever may be filmed before they're auditioned.

There were some students from GT in an MTV reality TV show. They said that they would go about their business and work without a script, but they said that they would have to redo stuff (like walking into a room) a lot until it was to the network person's liking. So it was sort of reailty, but not.

Nope, "reality tv" is trash. It's an opinion of what reality should look like when really it's rehearsed garbage which is the reason why it's the same thing over and over and over.

The only "reality" I ever watch is stuff like Cops but I've always considered that more of a documentary.

I try to watch as little T.V. as possiable. Unfortunatly thats all my family ever does together and I get bored and go out and watch something with them. I usually end up making fun of it and they tell me to go away.

I think there is one major rule to "reality TV": if no one is getting screwed, the show loses.

I think Jerry Seinfield put it best when he said on the Tonight Show:

"Why would I want to watch reality TV? I already go to work and deal with stupid people. Why would I then go home and then watch more stupid people?"

(that's paraphased btw. I don't remember exactly how he said it)

I like reality shows focused on what the people do instead of just the people. (ex. American Chopper, Miami Ink, etc.)

When bad acting occurs, there's something cool to watch them do.

Adult Swim has a fun saying on that (found on one of their DVDs): "Why watch it for free when you can pay for it!"

Reality TV is crap, but some TV is good. I consider everything Master Shake says to be absolutely true. That's why he's the master.

Yeah and then you can watch it as much as you want on your TV.

Mythbusters is the only "Reality" TV I can watch, and that's stretching the network's definition of "Reality" pretty far.

I've caught an episode or two of Dirty Jobs, and that one is kind of funny. The host makes the worst jokes, but it's fun to see him slogging through poo.

I'm surprised so many people don't watch television.

I don't even have a television myself, but every now and then I get trapped somewhere and the only thing I can do is watch something. And more often than not, it's some stupid reality TV show about dating or something.

I watch SG-1, Atlantis, and (as of late) Galactica. The rest of my TV diet is pretty much re-runs of old sitcoms.
2006-01-12, 6:12 PM #30
The only TV I watch is anime on adultswim and the news from both local and cable networks. I would only watch TV land with my Dad if he is watching it.

I don't bother with primetime television because quite frankly most of it is crap. Sitcoms aren't funny anymore. The humor in them is mostly just smutt these days. Also, reality TV is annoying too. Only the ones that are game shows that don't have a really dumb premise are ok to watch. I absolutely hate the bachelor shows. They're stupid because once the guy (or girl) picks the one they want, they don't stay together very long, making the entire show a complete waste.

The only shows I watch are the Simpsons and 24. (24 has achieved God Status, btw). Aside from that, I'm a movie man.

here is my take:

sitcoms /= real
unsciripted /= real
news /= real

IMHYAO: Monk is the only good show out there

(24 is not being taken into consideration because I have not seen it)

Monk is fantastic.

All "reality" tv sucks.

I wouldn't classify Mythbusters as "reality tv"

The folks in charge at fox are morrons, Firefly should never have been canceled.

yes.

2006-01-12, 8:34 PM #36
I mean they don't tell the whole truth (I know that it is impossible to do)
no news that I have seen is completely "fair and ballanced" as FOX likes to claim
they all have a point they like to push but for the most part they do

when I say real I mean showing real people as they are.
the news shows whats happening but it picks what to show based on what they want people to see.

so I guess according to the deffinition no one can show reality.

sorry I see I did get a bit to generalised, but my main point was that
everything including the news must be taken with a (at least one) grain of salt.

no the TV is not all lies but people need to use decernment about what they believe about it

sorry for sounding so skeptical and conspirousy theory-ish.

The news is annoying.

Let's say I am wearing a black shirt.

I say it is black. Someone says it is green. Rather than telling everyone that it is a black shirt, they say that I say it is black and someone says it is green. It's stupid.

Then you get people like Sean Hannity who say it is obviously green when it's ****ing black.

And I'm fairly conservative in a lot of areas. I just can't stand conservative media.
