I'm really starting to hate job hunting...

Don't worry, this isn't going to be a blog so don't dismiss it as one until you have finished reading.

After learning about it on Friday, today I got up and headed down town to go on an job interview for KFC for a position in food preparation. KFC in my area is only doing job interviews at one particular restaurant and its between the hours of 12 PM - 6PM on tuesday (which is today, derrr).

So I go into the restaurant and told one of the cashiers that I'm here for a job interview. She then looks at me dumbfounded (she didn't look terribly bright to begin with) and told me that they weren't interviews right now DESPITE THE FACT THAT A BANNER AT THE DOORWAY SAID THEY ARE. So I look at her like "what?" and told her about the banner at the doorway. She goes to the manager, speaks with her, and then comes back and tells me to write my name and phone number down and a paper. I told her that I hadn't filled out an application yet (because the KFC I went to on friday told me to go fill one out at the interview) and she's like "Oh I'm sorry, we don't have any applications available right now" and I'm like "WTF?". Anyhow, she says to me that some people are already in a "line" for interviews so it was necessary for to give my name and phone number. Since I had my father drop me off just a while ago (I don't drive due to a lack of a car), I didn't feel like taking 2 buses to get home just for them to call me so I told her I rather wait in the restaurant until they can call me from there when they can interview me.

So I go sit in the back and wait. The manager then comes out and tells me that they weren't doing interviews TODAY and that she'll call me when they are ready. I'm standing there going in my head "stupid brood... is she too blind to read the banner at the doorway?" but I didn't want to argue with her since that'll leave a bad impression and ruin my chances to get hired so I just left and took the bus home.

Ok, that's the story. Here how this isn't a blog:

Anyone else ever feel like they are given the "run around" when interviewing for a job or some dumb confusion similar to what happened to me today? Anyone else thinks its annoying how much red tape you have to get through to get a stupid entry level job like flipping burgers or lifting boxes? I'm seriously getting tired of all this crap yet at the same time I'm not saying that I want it to be handed to me on a silver plater. I'm just venting here, that's all.

well your 1st mistake was KFC.

I'm pretty sure you're above that kind of manual labour crap for dummies.

You said it yourself the girl at the checkout was a bonified moron.

Anyway, I digress. Yes, i know the feeling. They really mess with you, somtimes it feels like part of the test.

But most of the latest places I worked at were excellent in terms of how they treated staff, apart from being too strict [fire me for being ill for 6 days in 3 months will ya? Next.Ltd can BURN IN HELL!!!]

Dude look for better jobs, do office temping and part time data logging or something,... or do what I do, be a rent boy.

Yesterday, I got 2 small jobs in the same day.

The first one was a typing job for this guy, and the second is an AP Biology Tutor (I knew I took that class for a reason)

The Typing job is $10 for each assignment, and the tutoring job is $15/hr.

anyways, like Ruthven said, don't do the fast food. you're better than that.

Well, I do have another interview with Carl's Jr on Thursday so there's another chance for me to use my food prep certificate.

I did apply for an office assistant II for the county a couple of months ago. My scores were really high (especially the computer parts) but sadly they haven't opened any positions yet so its the wait game for now.

I would've argued with the manager at KFC, actually I probably would've got thrown out... you don't want to work under idiots anyway. I would've made that clear.

Really...don't work under people like that KFC manager. I'm running into the same problem with trying to find jobs now. I worked at Denny's and at a theater (still there actually) and at both jobs I have someone over me trying to put be down because I'm "wasting my life" by going to college. I might quit tomorrow and become an unemployed bum (again.)

Only thing I hate about interviews is not getting called back, even to let you know that you didn't get the job. Jerks.

I got a letter from kohls once telling me I wasn't picked. After getting that, I actually like not knowing I didn't get picked.

thank for attending our interview.

this is when I throw the letter away, and say "phew that was close I almost had to live in the REAL world for a minute there!!!"
and then I go back on my computer and let the world fade away.

Savage, look for jobs at RCC. They should have a hotline or website giving a long list of jobs. You don't have to be a student there to apply.

That, or one of the numerous medical centers we have around here. It might be difficult without a car, though. They often need couriers or attendants (wheelchair pushers, information retrievers). A buddy of mine got a job recording patient information off a little monitor at Loma Linda. It took two weeks of classroom type training, but they paid him $23/hr.

Ok, today I went downtown again for an interview with Carl's Jr. It was supposed to be at 3:00 PM today BUT when I got there, one of the shift leaders told me that they recently changed managers and the NEW time for job interviews is on Wednesdays at 9:00 AM. Arg!

Oh well, at least the good news is that Coco's restaurant is now hiring for all positions and its not far from Carl's so I'm going to try to apply there.

You're a geek right? Get some stupid certification and work doing PC repair or something. KFC doesn't pay you more than 5$ an hour does it?

i worked at pizza hut for 1.5 years, then i went back 2 years after i quit, to a different one.....and the same old stuff, so i walked out at the end of my shift after getting payed and only been back once. walmart is better. i make $7.80, and i've only been working there 7 months. also check out temp agencies like spherion or manpower, get into a factory they pay good and the work is easy, if not mind-numbingly repetative.

Sav...if i may call you sav, you are all together too intelligent to work at a KFC. every single KFC i've ever been to, the staff have all been complete idiots. (with the odd exception of the KFC/Taco Bell combos. its really rather strange)

Savage, if you can get reliable transportation, you should apply at the Costco depot I used to work at. I quit last September, but not because it was a bad job. It was a very good job, good paying, with a future. I just didn't want *that* future.

Anyway, it's right across the 60fwy at the I-15 (I am not sure when in Riverside you are located), but it's only about 15 minutes away, if you can get hold of a car. You'd have to work everyday, but they give several shift options (5am, 7am, 9am, 1pm, 3pm) and start at $10/hr. They give regular pay raises based on hours worked. A very good job, if you an get transportation.

If you go through with it, ask for Rene from Maintenance (althoug he may have moved since Sept), and tell him Steven Valadez sent you. You're guaranteed a job that way. No kidding. ;)

Retail pays more than that, you'd be better off working in retail, more opportunities to get ahead in the field, how old are you these days savage?

You'd be better off working for UPS.

Because you'll get medical benefits on top of your normal pay.

Which for a package handler is $9.00.

UPS also provides a FUTURE, incase your current dreams fall through.

Odds are this summer they'll be hiring more package handlers. They have to create so many jobs a year under the new contract as well. And summer is usually when people quit, because the work is hard. But its so worth it when you get into great shape.

Ok, here are the details of my situation

- I'm 24 years old (yes, don't laugh - its a long story)
- I don't have a car or driver's licence yet (need money to get both)
- Transportation is limited to the bus routes and my father giving me a ride (when he is able that is)
- I live in the woodcrest area of riverside which is slightly in the boondocks. The bus route I need to take to get to the nearest hub of the transit system only comes every hour so that limits me a bit.
- The reason I'm focusing on fast food or sitdown restaurants for now because I tried the retail route but got fed up with the red tape and idiots that don't know how to manage. If food service doesn't work out, I'll try something else.

You don't need a license to work as a package handler.
