Should I get galaxies?

I got bored of WOW. I only intend to play an MMORPG for a few months anyways, and Star Wars has always been a great great game to me.. PLus I can get it for 24.99

The main question I have is.. Can you be a jedi?

And is it worth buying?

NO!

Star Wars Galaxies is horrible.

I guess the SWG 14-day Trial is still online somewhere, so you could test it.

I'll second SavageX, though perhaps without as much oomph. Guild Wars is loads of fun, but I kind of miss beta testing WoW. Plus, there are many annoying people in GW, though I guess that's true of any MMO these days.

I played it before the changes and it was pretty good. Though I never had anyone on to play with when I was on, so it got boring.

I'm guessing that because the game has no monthly fee, a much younger audience has access to the game than other mmorpgs would. I'm not really bugged by it much because I don't really play with other people when playing the PvE part of the game. When it comes to PvP, I mostly play the arena mode (random PUG mode) with pvp-only characters that I can easily delete without worry so if I play really crappy in pvp, I can just delete that char and no one will know. As for GvG, I thankfully joined a guild that seems to be pretty laid back so I don't have problems with anyone in that guild although some of them do get annoying every now and then.

Then whats the point? MMOS require huge time investments, especcially the carebear ones like SWG. Get an FPS or something.

I have a Galaxies I'll sell to you for cheap. It's "An Empire Divided" I bought it used at a second hand store, I think all the cds are there and they are in pretty good shape. I'll sell it to you for $10 shipped, if you want it.

...Or he could get Guild Wars since there's no monthly fee :)

GW is a good game but it's still falsely advertised as an MMORPG.

Galaxies was good back in the old days but then they ****ed it up with jedis.
2006-01-11, 6:51 AM #14
If Galaxies didn't have player Jedi, it would be great. But when every other person has five alt Jedi accounts, its pathetic.

Guild Wars I only tried for a short while during one of their "open weekends", it was very pretty. Didn't really get to have a good go at it, but it was very pretty.

WoW is fun, but only if you're playing with at least a few other people all the time... you can go off and explore stranglethorn vale (I think thats what its called) but you're buggered if you actually find anything. "Hey, did you want insert amazingly rare plant/mob spawn/etc? Oh crap, whats *URK*" "Yeah, sure, where are you?" "Dead."

City of Heroes is a game you can easily pick up and dive into for half an hour, without having to hang around for buffs, head to a store for potions, or sit at a meeting stone for a year whilst people go "Oh, you're that class? They suck." if you're not a min/maxer. I didn't get a chance to try CoV, but I can only imagine that its just as fun.

A relatively unknown MMO is Neocron/Neocron 2. If you're looking for a cyberpunk feel, go for this. Its an MMOFPS (Not like GunZ), and I believe its recently undergone a major facelift (newer graphics engine, models, etc) to bring it up to modern standards, since it began looking like Deus Ex.

Along the same vein is Face of Mankind, but I've not had a lot of experience with it. Last I checked FoMk was still in open beta.

Hope that helped.

I had SWG for some time and I had a really powerful pistol, so if I attacked something, it would be dead before I raised my gun. :p

I wish the NGE never happened. The CU was tolerable.

Advice: Don't.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Oh god, I thought I would try out the 10-day free trial with the NGE 'features'. Now, I don't know what it was like before the changes, but it sucked pretty bad right then. Nothing attacked me, regardless of hostility (unless I attacked it first), and I could fire as fast as I clicked the mouse button, even with a pistol. And it's hard to miss. Also, monsters do like 3 damage per hit. Basically, you can't die. Also, the animations suck and hte game is badly optimized. Many areas ran slowly, and htey weren't very graphics-intensive areas.

Long story short: Don't get Galaxies. Good concept, horrible execution.
DO NOT WANT.
2006-01-11, 2:39 PM #18
Fire as fast as you click you say?

That sounds like it might be awesomely-real.

Which was my gripe when I played the game like 15151`4 years ago on a free trial.. I could stand right next to somethig with a rifle, shoot, miss, then die.

Yeah, the new combat system in SWG is more action oriented than most MMORPGs. The controls feel more like an FPS.

You fire/attack with your weapon with the left mouse button and use a special attack with the right mouse button. The number keys sets the special attack for the right mouse button to use. The game also automatically targets whatever target is under your crosshair so you can easily attack more than one target with ease instead of having to manually select a target.

With a combat system like that, its a great way to take on a mob of monsters with a range weapon but it kinda sucks when using a melee weapon. Also, having to press a number button to select a special attack and then press the right mouse button is a bit slower than the ol' press-a-number-button-to-cast-spell method.
