I'm back! Hello!
2006-01-11, 10:34 PM #1
Hello fellow Massassians!

After thourough assessment, I have come to a conclusion. Since I started four years ago with Redhat, I have used Ubuntu, Mandrake, Fedora, MEPIS, KNOPPIX, Debian, Slackware, Gentoo, LFS, FreeBSD and NetBSD. I must have over a thousand hours of experience.

Guess what?

Unix SUCKS!

Big time, too.

Do I even need to explain? I think you all know why it blows chunks.

Things I also hate:

  • World Wide Web (WWW)
  • WWW Forums
  • Polititians
  • Capitalism
  • Terrorists
  • Network Television
  • Mega Corporations
  • Slashdot
  • Most Video Games
  • Ice Cream
  • Creationists
  • Firefox
  • Simpsons
  • Family Guy
  • China
  • George W. Bush
  • Michael Moore
  • Richard Stallman
  • People who know nothing about computers and call linux: GNU/Linux

I'm not that cynical! I like a few things:

  • Math
  • Physics
  • Calculators
  • Computers
  • The Internet
  • E-Mail
  • Paper
  • Pen
  • Typewritter
  • Rocks
  • Piano
  • Plan 9
  • Inferno
  • Hex
  • Art
  • Lojban
  • Wikipedia
  • Sound

In conclusion: Unix sucks!

Thanks!

You know that the Firefox team basically butured the Netscape interface, and made it more like internet explorer? Thats why I use the Mozilla suite. Firefox also uses more memory and is slower.

Butchered*. And no, they made the interface more windows friendly because the Mozilla suite is honestly not only the UGLIEST thing I've ever seen, but also one of the most obviously linux interfaces. It's bloated, takes up more memory (in windows, yes. It takes up ASSLOADS of memory--main reason I held off until I found phoenix/firefox) and runs much slower.

Agreed. Sorta. Firefox is a leaky, buggy, bloated memory hog that is only better than IE because it isn't targeted as often.

...What about MacOS X? or Solaris running on a SPARC? Linux running on a Zaurus?

The quality of a UNIX environment - like everything else - depends on how it's used. Windows is no better or worse than KDE, but more end-user applications are written for Windows and more people are used to it. Environments hand-tailored to desktop or workstation use - like MacOS X and Solaris (non-OpenSolaris) - are miles ahead of anything else on the market.

You just aren't the target audience of the UNIXes you used. I don't need to tell you why, because I think you already know.

Firefox 1.0.X was better with the memory. Now Firefox 1.5 seems to be gobbling my memory. I've seen it as high as 100K in the process list.

Oh yeah and definitely Toxx Clause.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Except that the interface sucked, and the Mozilla Suite uses a metric assload of memory more than Firefox?

Of course, that's not on top of the horrible compliancy problems (they sometimes make IE5 look good), and the fact that it still uses that crappy archaic netscape 4 theme trash.

And I'm still waiting to hear why L-Unix sucks?

What? I ran Netscape Navigator on Windows long before I even knew what Linux was.

On NetBSD, my Pentium 4 2.60 GHz proccesor based PC loads Mozilla 1.7.12 between 1 and 2 seconds. It loads Firefox 1.5 in 3 seconds! The Mozilla Suite uses 15 MB of memory, where Firefox alone uses 14 MB! Just imagine how much memory it would take to run Firefox, Thunderbird, and Sunbird! Opening Mozilla mail only increases memory usage by 3 MB, because the resources are shared between each Mozilla component. I happen to use every single one of them!

Actually, Unix is extremely useful to me from a user's perspective. I use make to build software, snd to edit audio, blender to edit video, the GIMP for images, emacs for text, TeX for typesetting, dosbox to run Dark Forces... and so on. I can set up the enviornment to be used very effectivly. From a programmers perspective, however, things are a big mess. Unix was designed before the Internet and video displays. Since then, Unix has been convoluted to accomplish every task imaginable in every way imaginable. And in Linux, the Framebuffer device and the X server fight over control of the video hardware. In addition, most programs are written in C, which is volitole and gives unnecessary control to the application prgrammer.

Practical? Absolutely. Necessary? Unfortunately Beautiful? Nooooo.....

Unix pales in comparison to Plan 9 and Inferno in terms of elegance. Too bad those will never be popular. Just like the convoluted World Wide Web, I see Unix as a necessary evil that I'm allowed to hate but still use because it's useful.

I'd also like to mention that KDE and Mac OS X were made to hide Unix from the user.

15 mb of memory? Christ, if that's EVER a big deal to you you need to stop using the computer. I mean now. Not only that, but you're talking in BSD, which is dramatically different from windows performance-wise. Also...you're talking about a second, and a few megs. Seriously. I feel the need to reiterate how LITTLE of a difference that is.

Finally: The first post you make upon your "return" probably shouldn't be some elitist geek trolling post where you bash everything people like for stupid--or nonexistant--reasons (because you feel cool while doing it).

I only edit posts for typos... so, I apologize for the triple post.

I'd like to mention that I don't like layers upon layers of software. I also hate most GUI's. What I really like is Plan 9's Rio, which is amazingly simple. In Unix, programs work with text, and files are just streams of bytes that usually comprise of text. I think X Window lost sight of that. Rio is beautiful because it is able to retain this ideal. Every line of text on the screen is treated the same way! Even terminal output and the text of buttons can be copied or edited!

Plan9 sucks because Kernighan and Ritchie are not working on it.

Also, KDE and MacOSX hide the GUI on purpose. People want something that is easy to use, but has more features for those that want to use them. Way better than Gnome's idea of trying your hands behind your back.

Yoshi, are you implying that Windows performs better than BSD? Because if you are, you would be wrong.

Wow, you're lucky if firefox is only taking 14 megs of memory, hah. Quick check... 88 megs currently, I've seen it as high as 150 (multiple tabs open, at least two of which were large adobe acrobat files, also it had been running for several days at this point and it seems to take more and more memory and never give it back).

It works fine for me. In fact, it is so clean that not much mantainance is necessary. The system even boots in about 10 seconds! Other people from Bell Labs still work on it, and it is free software. Besides, inferno has commercial support.

Well, that is when it is first opened. After heavy usage, Mozilla quickly shot up to 70MB.
