Apparently, I've been getting broadband service from AOL for the last two years. Nevermind that all my current DSL stuff came from SBC (my phone company), including my ethernet card.

They've been charging to my mom's credit card for the last two years as well, without signed authorization. The big question...

Do you think I could win a lawsuit?

The new AIM sucks. AIM Triton? WTF is this crap? It installed spyware and about 6 AOL programs that I can't remove. It takes up a crap load of memory, it looks ugly, it's slow, and I hate it :( KILL THEM!
Think while it's still legal.

What he said.

If you ever had a trial of AOL, they probably started charging you as soon as it ended..they don't notify you or anything.

That's a very good thing for you. Without explicit authorization, their transaction is automatically void, opens them up to a number of charges, and gives you the perfect grounds for a lawsuit. And as was mentioned before, you could probably get a sweet settlement without too much trouble.

She doesn't regularly look at her detailed purchase statement thing. But she had quit using the card, and charges were still showing up, so she took a look at it, and they're charging us... for a service we could never have even used, at that. The only AOL I've ever had is dial-up, and my dial-up modem was my only internet connection. Unless broadband can suddenly use a 56k modem, I'd say that gives me a good shot at some sort of settlement. Especially since we cancelled our service before we got DSL with another company.

You can use the AOL 'service' with cable/DSL - RoadRunner & AOL come as a package nowadays. But..if you canceled your service, you should be all set.

Like I said, I didn't have cable or DSL connections to my computer at that time.

At what time - the time you had AOL? Sounds like they just never canceled it.

As far as not having a signed authorization..you really think that will hold up? When's the last time you ordered anything online and actually signed a credit card slip?
woot!

AOL really loves their customers. In fact, if you decide to leave AOL, they'll badger you to death until you had enough of their begging to go back.

I don't know. I'm trying to find what the laws are on internet credit card purchasing, but it's a little hard to search for.

AOL is notorious for things like this. People cancel, but keep on getting billed. IIRC there was some sort of class-action about this a long time ago, but I don't remember what came of it, if anything at all.

If you had AOL service and neve actually canceled it, you are SOL.

Kick his ***, seabass.

I dunno, I'm with Avenger. If your mom didn't see it was being charged then something's up with your mom and you should have cancelled.
I had a blog. It sucked.

Its most likely an agreement in the fine print with your SBC DSL provider. Qwest does it with MSN and AOL here all the time. You'll lose if you ever spend the money to take it to court.

Is it even possible for 2 DSL providers to use the same line?

The catch is that you can pay for AOL (their 'AOL with broadband') just to use their "service" -- you don't actually have to use them to connect to the internet. :(
woot!

What "service" is that, exactly?

The actual connection itself, the maintenance of said connection, etc. etc.

SBC leased the lines from someone, and that someone seems to have been AOL.

SBC is our phone company, and if I recall correctly, they currently have possession of the phone lines in our area because prior to them gaining control in this area, any form of broadband was unavailable.

I think you can pay for the AOL front-end, though - here you can get RoadRunner cable with AOL..just the whole AOL package - email/IM/'keywords'/what-have-you - I don't use AOL, so I'm not too familiar with what they offer.
woot!
2006-01-14, 3:54 PM #27
When you get AOL + Broadband, you get exactly that. You have the broadband, be it SBC or whatever, and then you have AOL's "services": the AOL program, email, IM, keywords, that crap.
2006-01-14, 4:45 PM #28
AOL no longer offers Bring Your Own Access (BYOA). It has been replaced with AOL Broadband, a full-blown service. Thusly, I couldn't have had it until today. They charge about $54 for an installation fee. It was nice of them to waive it for us.

...so we wouldn't notice, apparently.
