Bellevue, Wash., Jan. 10, 2006 — NCsoft®, the world's leading developer and publisher of online computer games, announces Guild Wars®: Factions™, the next chapter in the critically acclaimed Guild Wars franchise from ArenaNet® studios. The Factions campaign will release in the second quarter of 2006. It offers players an incredible gameplay experience with many new choices, including new regions, professions, skills, missions, and monsters, along with expanded options for both Cooperative and Player-versus-Player (PvP) play, and enhanced features for guilds.

Players will get their first chance to experience the new campaign when ArenaNet opens its servers to everyone for the Guild Wars: Factions Global Free-for-All PvP Weekend. This worldwide event—scheduled for January 20 through 22—is open to both existing Guild Wars players and to those who do not have a Guild Wars account. ArenaNet is distributing free access keys to the event at http://www.guildwars.com.

The event will enable players to experience two new professions being introduced in the campaign, the Assassin and the Ritualist. Participants will also be able to try out a number of the skills added to Guild Wars: Factions, including some of the deadly skills of the Assassin and the arcane spells of the spiritual Ritualist. They will also be able to get familiar with the new PvP continent, Battle Isles. Battle Isles will introduce players to new PvP experiences, new and expanded arenas, new quests, and a new explorable area as well.

Another feature available during the Guild Wars: Factions Global Free-for-All PvP Weekend is Observer Mode, where players who aren't participating in a battle can view the proceedings and check out the strategies and tactics used by top-ranked guilds as they fight for supremacy.

"We're excited to be offering this free preview of Guild Wars: Factions to players throughout the world," said Patrick Wyatt, co-founder of ArenaNet. "Factions is a huge step in the continued evolution of the game, and I think gamers are really going to be excited about the new features they're going to see!"

In September of 2005, Guild Wars surpassed more than one million units sold in North America and Europe, a milestone reached in less than five months. Guild Wars is a competitive online roleplaying game that rewards player skill more than time played. Players explore a rich fantasy game world, acquire skills, build personalized characters and compete in head-to-head guild battles with players from around the world.

Thanks for the pictures, I knew about the chapter 2 contents, but this is the first time I seen screenshots of the assassin.

I couldn't find shots on the Guild Wars site, but if you want large versions of those shots go to IGN and Gamespot.

someone said something about guild wars not being a true MMORPG, is this true?
2006-01-13, 5:59 PM #6
I'd say so. Or at least not when compared to other MMORPGs.
2006-01-13, 6:26 PM #7
It isn't a real MMO, but it's just as fun.

You can only see other players when you are in a towns and villages (The towns also use Districts, so you might teleport to a different district then your friend, but it's easy enough to change districts *click*.), but when you go out of the towns to PvE or do Quests or Co-op missions, you can only see the people in your party and the NPC's. Then again it doesn't bother me that much, because when I was playing WoW I didn't really care if I saw people or not while I was PvEing. It adds to the atmosphere of the game being DAMN HUGE (being able to see anyone, anywhere), but I don't mind that it isn't in Guild Wars. The game is still big enough for me.

The whole idea behind the instance bit is that it allows the player and their party to do quests without other groups getting in the way. It eliminates kill stealing and "waiting in line" to do a quest. It also allows quests to be more interactive and "cinematic" than other mmorpgs. Missions (similar to quests. Think of WoW's dungeons here) actually feature cutscenes where the party's leader actually has spoken dialogue. The whole PvE aspect of guild wars feels more like playing a single player RPG than a mmorpg.

Oh and shameless plug:

My guild is recruiting people and the deadline is the end of this saturday so if you're interested in doing some gvg battles with me, feel free to leave your player name here and I'll send you an invite. My characters are Alarik the Brave, Alarik the Monk, Ivona heal alot, and sassy yet deadly.

well thats ok for the single cost i suppose... but one of my favourite parts of WoW is coming across a random person, having a random chat, then grouping up for a quest thats way too tough for one person.

One more reason to buy Guild Wars...

You can get pets in WoW and name them whatever you want... And they're valuable assets to your fights to boot. :/

i love Guild Wars... but i love WoW...
the one thing WoW doesn't have but GW does is sexy graphics... and it's not the technology (the engine or anything like that) it's just the models.
the human male WoW characters are too well built and muscular... need to have some skinny ones, too!
and the armour in GW is just soooo sexy ;D

Pets help plenty in Guild Wars. They are really useful if you have a handful of guys attacking you, your pet will attack one or two of them, so you have more time to take guys on one by one. That's one of the reasons I am a Necromancer/Ranger. I have a pet AND I can have Bone Horrors at the same time. So I can have a small army getting all the damage taken, while I sit back and attack without taking much or any damage at all.

That's pretty much exactly what I describe what I do. Instead, I have a Ranger/Necro. But yeah, otherwise, that's always my strategy with my pet.

BTW, if you make a PVP only ranger and are wondering how to get a pet, all you have to do is put 9 attribute points into beast mastery and put charm pet skill on your skill bar and you'll get a free wolf pet when you inter pvp mode. Sadly, I don't think you can rename that pet you get.

We just owned some guild in half the time it took us last night. Our healers PC even crashed half way through the match and we still destroyed them.
