2004-06-06, 4:46 PM #1
Ok, everyone. one thign straight before we kick this off. THIS THREAD IS NOT FOR DISCUSSION, ARGUMENT, OR EVEN MUCH MEANINGFUL CONVERSATION, although if its meaningful i won't have a problem. This thread it to remember those soldiers that died in the D-Day invasion. This thread is to commemmorate their sacrifice. If you feel the need to argue about war, see my other thread, coming soon.

My salute to those who fought for us!

Forgive the confusion, but what do we do? I was under the impression that remembering was a conative process and not a literary one. Unless this is a thread to show thanks. In which case I say thank you to those who fought and died, and thank you more for those who fought and lived, because you lived on to win the war and save us.

I don't want your signature on the same page as mine. It's talking to my signature, and making it feel bad about itself.

Anyone who likes to respect the veterans and those who gave their lives, remember the importance, lessons and losses of war and find the how much sacrifice is needed for peace by playing a video game, watching a movie or anything WWII-themed personal entertainment should be bashed on the back of the neck...

I can agree with the video game comment, but the movies, epecially the good ones, show those of us who weren't there what happened on June 6th, 1944.

Good point. Some war movies can be touching. But not really video games.

I'm a little worried at how quickly this came to slip so far down the page, while of course the debate thread is still right up there, so I thought I'd share my thoughts.

The whole remembering D-Day thing (along with all the other WW memorial days) have always been problematic for me, considering my personal views about war. But nobody can deny that what was done needed to be done. Somebody also mentioned in another thread (the one closed yesterday, I think) that just because you don't condone the war, it's no reason not to think of the people who had to fight it. I watched a news report on the 6th about D-Day and they spoke to a veteran who talked briefly about his experiences, but then went on to say that his heart went out to those who were and still are in Iraq. Now I don't know whether he agreed with the war there, but it was obvious that his support was for the individuals, and what they have to go through, no matter the outcome.
I feel the same, I most certainly didn't agree with the Iraq war, but I still feel for the soldiers, and of course the civilians caught up in it all.

As for those who fought for us 60 years ago, it was a remarkably brave and selfless thing they did, and I think we should all be grateful.
