Tracing an e-mail...
2006-01-16, 5:23 PM #1
Ok.. I've got this e-mail... but I have reason to believe its not who the person says... and it could be some one else. How ever I think this some one else isn't bright enough to change computers when he/she connnects and disconnects from the MSN account... so I need a way to do an IP trace on an MSN account when I'm chatting... any suggestions?

Ruthy, can I be in?

I can pretend to be 8.

Send/receive a file from them. While the transfer is taking place, pluck their IP off the list of network connections from netstat or TCPView.

Thanks... I'm doing that right now.

You can find out what server the e-mail was sent from by just checking the e-mail header, though if they sent it through a web interface that wont tell you much... Ther e are also various other ways such as using embeded images hosted on a sever you control to find out when and from where the e-mail was actually read from...

I know there's an option in hotmail for displaying all sorts of information from the senders of e-mails. It has been a while since I used it, though.

By the way... the IP won't necessarily tell you anything... ISP is near-guaranteed.

If you're lucky, you'll get the state he's in. Maybe the county/city. You might be able to get the address/phone number of the local branch of his ISP, or you might get stuck with their HQ address/number.

He had his lone soldier kill his informants, they knew too much.

Like that he wasn't really that good at kung-fu, he really isn't making a game but rather saying he is, and...hmm...there's a guy standing in my door with a gun with the name "Gold's Goldies" printed on his chest...

I'll be right back, I forgot to say I was his last informant.

Duh.

But Gold's informants are also his parents and siblings, and I just happened to be in the house working for Third Echelon trying to shut down the Gold's Goldies when he recruited me.

Call the CIA. In fact, they're probably watching this now and are already on the case.

The CIA rarely acts on U.S. soil. The NSA and FBI are the ones to worry about.

If it's hotmail, you can easily find the IP of anyone that sends you an email. It's in the information line, figure it out, it's right there.
