The PS2 poll!

I'm thinking of buying a PS2, but to get it cheap, I'm thinking of waiting until PS3 comes out. Logically, there should be a price drop. However, I'm not sure if that's going to be the case. What do you think?

A PS3 would cost around a 1000 dollars though, no?

Has the X-box dropped in price very much since the 360 came out? (I haven't been checking)

I'm sure it will be a similar situation with the PS2 whenm the Ps3 launches.

Isn't the slim PS2 like $99 as it is?

personally, i dont think the Ps3 will be able to contend with XBOX 360 or Nintendo Revolution.

Sony should stick to speakers and stereos... :em321:

XBox360 is a load of crap, that's ready to overheat and catch fire. The promised performance of the system has definately NOT delivered.

Nintendo Revolution is aiming toward a whole seperate market, and even if it takes the console war by storm, it's still not going to beat a number one spot. Simply put, people will be very wary of buying it, it's sorta like the Virtual Boy. It'll either do well, or flop.

PS3, however, promises big-time graphics, and has full backwards compatibility with PS2 and PS1 games, something the XBox360 is still trying to get working perfectly. And as usual, it will have huge developer support. The only thing that might flop the PS3 is the pricetag.

Word, and they already said under 500, probably around 400 is what analysts say.

The PS3 will be worth the money I think. And neither the controller NOR the actual look of the system are final designs--in fact, the controller is definitely getting reworked and is staying true to the DS2 (that's what Sony's having people use for now until they get another controller mock-up)

question... is the PS3's backwards compatibility going to include running all games at HDTV resolutions?

Nobody knows, but doubtful. Still, running 3 full generations of games on one console innately is impressive.

everything i've herd says that developers are still planning on launching more ps2 titles for up to a year (similar to what they did with the psx) due to that the new processor requires so much new technology that only the top developing teams can afford to get the disk writing and debug machines plus send their programmers to classes to learn the new hardware. Granted this was the exact same scenario from the psx to the ps2, and there was a price drop, but the hardware jump from psx to ps2 was a drop in the bucket compared to all the new stuff involved with upgrading to developing for the ps3, so i fully expect the ps2 to go strong for at least a few months to close to a year before we see a noticible price drop (one of more than $20).

I say wait for it, but realize that you will be waiting til the PS3 release plus probly about 4 or 5 months til a noticable (or worth wild) change in price happens.

Probably, we will see a signifigant influx in used PS2 consoles on E-bay for cheap prices as people dump their old hardware after they upgrade to PS3. (logically, if the PS3 is completely backwards-compatible, then there is no reason to hang onto the old PS2)

I think I read somewhere that not all games will be backwards compatible on the PS3... lemme try to dig it up, I could be wrong.

Edit: Found it

That's an older article--they announced in December of last year they're adding the PS2 and PS1 ROM chips to the machine, meaning true hardware emulation. I assume that means all titles will work.
