how are we not furry?

This is a semi-serious question. It would seem that a creature with fur would be more likely to survive to breeding age than a creature without, as he/she/it would be better protected from the elements.

Have any scientists addressed this issue? If so, what was their conclusion? If not, why haven't they? Isn't that their job?
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

surely we were much more beastly creatures when we lived in caves?

now that we have lovely houses all that extra hair isnt so vital... although some people are still pretty furry.

y would we need fur??????

us humans are smart enough to build houses, fires and coats ........no reason to have fur

Uh, because people evolved in Africa?

You know, where it's hot? :p

And the fact that we wear clothes, extra layer of warmth isn't needed.

We have hair.

Monkeys have fur. We branched off from them, became smarter, and developed fire. Fire negates the need for fur. And we've had fire for hundreds of thousands of years, which is long enough to lose our fur through evolution.

You'll note that it's not actually gone though. We still have fur on our heads, armpits, and... well, you know. And everywhere else still has hair, but it's much thinner and in some places shorter than it used to be. We're still in the process of losing it; in another million years we'll probably look like the stereotypical grey aliens.

At least that's my simplistic take on it.

P.S. I'm going to shoot the first pedantic *** that tries to point out that we actually evolved from chimpanzees or gorillas or orangutans or whatever the hell it was. "Monkey", as far as I'm concerned, is a catch-all term that means "non-human primate".

We do have fur, in two senses.

The first is lanugo, small hairs that cover the fetus and are shed when it is about 35 weeks.

The second is hair on your head, face, armpits and pubic hair. As a byproduct of the evolution of walking on two legs, less of the body really needed to be covered by hair, and for different purposes.

Generally, your premise that a 'creature with fur is more likely to survive' is simplistic - there are plenty of creatures that survive well without fur, and we're just one of them.

as you'll also find with fire, in the wrong circumstances it doesnt take hundreds of thousands of years for it to make you lose your hair.

Do you know why you get Goosebumps and why the hair on the back of your neck stands up when you get scared/stressed? These are all physiological responses that are "left over" from when the human progenitor had fur.

Goosebumps are a series of small muscles that raise the hairs and attempt to create a pocket of air between the hair (fur) and the skin, thus providing better protection from the cold.

When those same muscles trigger on the back of your next, it is usually a response to stress and is a an attempt to make you look bigger and more intimidating to a potential threat (think of what dogs and cats do).

The presence of these "Vestigial" responses is a strong indicator of a human Progenitor that was covered with hair.

As for why human’s lost their fur/hair, once humans began to advance and be able to manipulate their environment (shelters, basic clothing, fire) hair became devaluated. The presence of hair was no longer a significant advantage. In fact it is arguable that at some point the presence of hair might have become a slight disadvantage.

Of course this is indeed mostly theoretical, but it is generally accepted by most biologists.

females lost their hair faster than us males, and us male monkey men, were like, dude, check her out, she's hot. I can see her boobs cos she aint got hair on her chest!

And then God was like, hmmmm, they're right, i can see boobs from on high when i remove all the hair.

So god said "let there be less hair!"

And God saw that it was good. Very Good.

I actually buy into the aqua-ape theory. The theory states that the region human ancestors developed was flooded, and thus we adapted more like our sea-bound mammalian cousins. I find this theory explains why we have lost most of our hair and instead developed different fat deposits than most land-bound mammals, and more similar to mammals that spend large amounts of time in water (hippos for instance).

Yes I watched that documentry.

Also explains our increase in brain mass.

It's also important to remember, in addition to the responses above, that extra physical traits require extra resources and energy to develop and maintain, and therefore would probably be selected against to some degree.
