Sith2 and JK: Rebirth

Are the projects going to be combined? The models and textures on JKR are EXCELLENT, and with the new Sith2 engine, it could make once awesome super-mod of some sort. Sith2 seems to be running slow, maybe JKR could speed it up? Are there any plans for combining efforts?

As far as I know, yes. Sith 2 will be released with JK Rebirth (which will also feature some awesome redo's of the JK MP levels.)

However, I don't think the projects are directly linked. So if Sith 2 never sees the light, JKR might.

Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone.

as far as I know they are not directly link as in they are not dependent on one another but they are basicaly working on 2 different aspects of the same project which is remaking JK to be prettier.
JKR is just doing the graphics like models, levels, textures etc. and sith2 is building a new engine which is able to use all those model, levels & stuff.
of course sith2 is not limited to useing JKR's stuff.

it's all greek to me. Are either of them any reason for me to drive back to my parent's house to get my JK disc?

YES!

Well, maybe. Sith2 has had no new news so I am not positive (though hopeful) that it will see the light of day. We could ask Jon' C but it's better not to bother him, methinks.

Sith2 is a new engine, a stand alone that does not require JK to run. HOWEVER, it uses JK resources, which theoretically means that you should be able to run JK and all the mods on a new, more beautiful engine with modern processing effects and such. JK Rebirth is a new set of resources to be used in JK or SITH2 which are higher quality, further increasing the sex.

I hope that it comes to fruition.

You guys basically have it right.

SITH2 is a new engine that runs and requires JK resources to operate. It's got several swank things to improve it, but mostly, the goal is to achieve a stable netcode. Larger texture sizes, higher model detail rendering, and several other things will make Sith2 a superior engine to the Sith engine by Lucasarts.

JKR is a graphical update to all aspects of JK, including model textures, [Zully is independantly making all level textures, so that's NEITHER project, but more Sith2 than us] models, all 3DOs, model animations, and all MP levels. Efforts to reconstruct the single player maps is a possibility, but not at all our goal at this point.

JKR WILL be released for JK, but it's uncertain how it'll run. Specifically, JKR is designed with Sith2 in mind. Sith2 will also be released with JKR as it's non-JK resources. The goal is to [possibly] make Sith2 standalone from JK, requiring NONE of it's resources, thus making a whole new stand alone game. We haven't begun discussing how to dodge lawyers, but we should be able to get a few headshots before we go down.

So JKR is good to go and so is SITH2 (AFAYK?)

as far as I know, SITH2 is stumbling over the physics engine

Yes. I can't so much speak for Sith2, but JKR is [however slow] up and on it's way to completion. What I know about Sith2 is that they're having some fugglies with the physics coding, and the project is on hold for a while.

One has to remember that Jon`C had been working on Sith2 years before he showed anyone the project, and almost another half a year before he showed the public. JKR is the same way.

What you call "slow," we call "Steady." We as designers are comfortable with the pace. The community, however, doesn't make that pace feel very "comfortable" when they start saying things like "Looks like we spoke too soon" or "Oh, Sith2 and JKR look dead." That doesn't help AT ALL, and makes us regret ever showing the public ANYTHING.

Wow, those JKR models really look great. Keep up the good work guys.

Actually it seemed to me that there was a lot of activity, and then it dropped off. JKR kept posting stuff, but I didn't know SITH2 was having hangups.

Sorry about that.

Oh, don't worry, I wasn't poking at you. A lot of people did that a while back, and I was just reminding people now.

Guys, if you're interested in more of JK's revival, stop off at my new thread and get informed!

As for Sith 2, if anybody here is a decent physics coder we could really use you. I know there are a few people in the community who said they'd like to work on Sith 2, but haven't touched the source code now that it's out.

Cough.

Once passable physics are added to Sith 2 there isn't a whole lot more that needs to be done. Mostly minor gameplay stuff, netcode and polish.

yeah that would be a huge improvement to get JKR levels looking up to par.

So are you wanting to do it from scratch, or is the problem implementing some engine you already have?

Has anyone taken the time to actually contact Lucasarts and see if they will ever release the source to JK/MOTS or even GPL it?

I did once.

They said no.

Then again, I got the impression that the people who handled my questions didn't REALLY bother to ask up the chain.

I suppose it could be worth another try.

On a note related to SITH2, Jon, are variable physics (ala Serious Sam) anything to be thought about in SITH2, or is that totally dependent upon the physics yet to be implemented?
