Uh-oh. Steven Harper is in power now... hide your children! Anyone have any thoughts on our newly Conservative government?

Consider yourself lucky.

We've been under "NEW" labour for years.

I wish for the return of Conservative, under a new leader, Cameron. That would be awesome.

Considering that the dumbass Quebec government plans to counter some of the changes Harper wants to make, well, it all feels like a truckload of bull****.

I just read this morning that the Quebec gov. mean to raise the PST by 2% tax if the Federal gov. lowers the GST by 2%. Dumb ****s. I hate quebec, will anyone spare their shed, some bread and water so I can become a hobo and reject of quebec ****ciety?

Nah, if Giles was elected he'd just separate Quebec from Canada, then leave. After all, isn't the Bloc a Separatist party? If that happened, we'd just have another election immediately, and Harper would have won anyway (as we've seen). I sort of wanted NDP to win, because Jack Layton's the only one of the "big three" who seems moderately innocent. Our new Prime Minister is just creepy, with that stiff smile and those beady little eyes. He makes me want to incite fifteen years of fiery, violent anarchy. Mister Paul Martin and his band of scallywags seem a little too interested in scandals and money and the like for my taste. All in all, Jack Layton is the only one who isn't trying to become PM for his own selfish desires.

I may get flamed for some of that. If so, do it over private messages kthx.

HAHAHAHA!

You know... part of me really, really wants the Liberals, Bloc and NDP to vote down a GST cut and a responsible government bill. Because then, 5 weeks later, it'd be a total shut-out. Canada would be a sea of blue from coast to coast.

And who in god's name would be against a 2% GST cut? A better question - why didn't anybody ever take Chretien to task for never following through with his campaign promise to eliminate GST? That was only 14 years ago and all.

Chretien and Martin deserve to go to jail. I really want to know why they aren't - just for adscam. Chretien was the ringleader, and Martin was the acting minister of finance so he's as guilty as anybody. Only in Canada.

To tell you the truth, I would have been fine with either the Liberals or Conservatives. I'm planning to join the armed forces in a couple years (or however long it takes my application to go through), so defense spending and foreign policy are big issues for me. I was not impressed with the way the Chretien government handled this, which swayed me to the Tories, but Martin and his people have taken promising steps to clean up their act. If I go on an overseas operation, I want to know that the logistics are well taken care of with sufficient funds.

As to foreign policy, I am quite supportive of both the Liberal and Conservative stances on cutting down on Canada's UN involvement in favour of smaller coalitions. The UN has become just too darned inefficient and impotent. That being said, don't stick me as an all-out supporter of Iraq. I'm all for fights against oppression, but only if well executed.

Phew! Well that's my $0.02.

Ha ha. The entire UN is impotent.

Okay okay, the Security Council, to be more specific. :p And while impotent may not be the best word, I don't find them nearly effective enough. This is just my personal feeling, according to my values and beliefs.

Jon'C wins.

And the PST hike isn't totally unfounded. Since PST in Québec is compounded over the GST, with the GST down 2%, the provincial government would be making less in PST. They would wind up loosing 0.15 cents in PST on every dollar's worth of goods sold once the GST is down to 5%. However, hiking the PST up 2% to compensate is just total bull****.

Besides, the other three parties are totally against the GST cut. It's not going to happen.
