Going to dabble in my third martial art..
2004-06-08, 5:00 PM #1
yeah, i've done Karate and got to the third belt( blue for us). I'm a one stripe white belt in Brazilian Jui-Jitsu. Now I'm going to learn a bit of Kickboxing at my local gym. Not really expecting a whole lot of special stuff since it is just my local gym, but hey, it will get me started. Also going to do some regular boxing too. So....um... post your martial art!!!!!

Well, I quit Karate because it interfered with my school sports, mostly wrestling. But I'm still doing Jui-jitsu at least once a week.

I'm currently taking Tae Kwon Do for the second time. I received by yellow belt in class on Monday. I was a green belt about 10 years ago, but my family moved to the country and I had to quite for a multitude of reasons (mainly financially). I used to compete in tournaments and all that, but I don't think I'm interested in that sort of thing anymore. I am having a blast though!

My grandfather used to teach me a little Jiu-Jitsu and boxing (he was a boxer in the army during WWII). My uncle used to teach me a little Judo, although very little.

I'm not the greatest martial-artist in the world and it's just a minor hobby to me, but it is quite fun.

I did Judo for about 6 years but I slacked off the last 2 years. I'm thinking of doing Ju Jitsu at uni although it's difficult thinking of departing judo for good, I'll just have to convince the sensei that randori would really help our training :P

How is it different from Chinese Chinese Kenpo?

Also, what is Drunken Boxing? I've seen various Hong Kong films with it, with the person becoming an alcoholic in the process. It isn't really, uh, boxing while drunk, is it? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

As far as I know it is boxing while you're drunk, but the the techniques have been taught so people who aren't inebriated can do it.

From the D&D sourcebook:

Few schools are as unusual - or as controversial - as Drunken Boxing. By weaving and staggering about as if inebriated, drunken boxers avoid many blows. Likewise, their stumbling, lurching attacks catch their opponents off guard. Moreover, when they actually imbibe alcohol, drunken masters can perform truly prodigious feats of strength and bravery.

I think that real drunken boxing (if it exists? (as a real martial art)) focuses more on bobbing, weaving, lurching, AS IF you were drunk, however.

Well its basis is Chinese Kenpo, but it's been modified and altered a good deal, I think.

The techniques have evolved, naturally. And the fighting principles were introduced by Joe Lewis.

I've been wanting to take up martial arts again, but I don't know what to go for. I'd like to learn something that focuses more on speed and avoiding/fending off attacks rather than just hitting back. I was thinking maybe Aikido? Any suggestions?

I think Akido would be nice. I think its mostly self defence training. Not sure. Anybody take it?

Chen style wushu .. more specifically (and at the moment), compulsory Nanquan (Southern Fist) and san da (free no-bounds combat .. some people call it Chinese street fighting, it's a weird kickboxing thingy .. except there are rules in competitions, so it's not really no-bounds =/ whatever) .. Going to try brazilian jujitsu over the summer (friend's dad is master in his tkd school and also teaches jujitsu), then doing japanese jujitsu during the school year as a school team sport .. bleh.

Wushu still kicks all of your asses xP

Aikido is one of the most spiritual martial arts in existance .. I don't take it, but I have friends who have or do take it .. it's really deep in the whole chi, nature, earth, bleh stuff .. I did a report earlier on it this year, but I don't really know that much about it .. more info here if you want.

I've been looking into Shotokan karate, which seems pretty good.

Does anyone know a (valid) martial art that meets the following terms:

- Focuses on neutralizing and evading your opponent's attacks rather than harming him (the less harmful moves the better)
- Exercises the mind equally with the body (or even focuses on the mind)
- The toughest term...is suitable for a person with osteoporosis (so far I've taken pretty rough blows from falls and such without fracturing anything, I'm only 20 though and I did fracture both of my right arm's wrist bones at the age of 10)

One that, even after meeting those terms, is a martial art of self-defence. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]
