Because of the other pirate thread, I'd just thought I'd start a poll to bring up some good ol' nostalgia of such a fine adventure series.

"Oh yeah... well you fight like a cow!"

(BTW, if you don't see a poll yet, BE PATIENT! Don't be a smug ******* and post that there isn't one, kthxbye)

"Guybrush, I am your brother." - Lechuck
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" - Guybrush

Nothing was better than Monkey Island 2. I loved that game. :D

"Well, you fight like a dairy farmer!"

hahaha

fantastic game!

I & II were the best! I'm going with the 1st one though. It's classic.

And Guybrush Threepwood is like the coolest name ever.

I always found it hilarious how in the second game he walks around with a huge load of cash on him and loses it all on the second panel of the game. Damn Largo and his bras!

COMI had "A Pirate I Was Meant to Be", the best graphics of the series, and loads of laughs.

The first one was great. Actually, I love all the Monkey Island games, but I'll always have a special place for Secret of Monkey Island.

(although I always get a kick out of hearing Dominic Armato saying "Loogie! Captain Loogie!" in Curse of :D)

The first was so unbelievably good. I learned English through MI (and the ultima and Indiana Jones series) so blame Guybrush for my ****ty English. The entire MI series (only played one to three) rocked so hard...

Call me oldschool, but they really don't make games like this anymore...

That's awesome. And it's true, they don't.

EMI wasn't too bad. It just felt different and not as cool. I've played through CMI at least 8 times just to hear all the great dialogue. I've only played through EMI once.

MI 1 & 2 I played through 2x each but my cousin then stole my disc (I bought them both on CD through that LucasArts adventure game pack which came with the easiest (Full Throttle) and the hardest (The Dig) LA adventure games I've ever played.

With a pulley in the middle! If I knew what the word 'pulley' meant back then, I would've solved the riddle much faster :/ . As a kid, I learned really quickly what a 'rusted shut door was', or a 'brass key' or what it meant to 'use whip on peculiar statue' :) .

Which was the one which first introduced Insult Arm Wrestling? That was my favourite.

So hard to choose between them, but the secret was a classic. I wish they made games like that now, they're one of my all time favourites.

<3<3<3<3

Insult: I will milk every drop of blood from your body!
Comeback: How appropriate. You fight like a cow.

Insult: I've got a long, sharp lesson for you you to learn today.
Comeback: And I've got a little TIP for you. Get the POINT?

Insult: My tongue is sharper then any sword.
Comeback: First you better stop waving it like a feather-duster.

Insult: My name is feared in every dirty corner of this island!
Comeback: So you got that job as janitor, after all.

Insult: My wisest enemies run away at the first sight of me!
Comeback: Even BEFORE they smell your breath?

Insult: Only once have I met such a coward!
Comeback: He must have taught you everything you know.

Insult: If your brother's like you, better to marry a pig.
Comeback: You make me think somebody already did.

Insult: No one will ever catch ME fighting as badly as you do.
Comeback: You run THAT fast?

Insult: My last fight ended with my hands covered with blood.
Comeback: I hope now you've learned to stop picking your nose.

Insult: I hope you have a boat ready for a quick escape.
Comeback: Why, did you want to borrow one?

Insult: My sword is famous all over the Caribbean!
Comeback: Too bad no one's ever heard of YOU at all.

Insult: I've got the courage and skill of a master swordsman!
Comeback: I'd be in real trouble if you ever used them.

Insult: Every word you say to me is stupid.
Comeback: I wanted to make sure you'd feel comfortable with me.

Insult: You are a pain in the backside, sir!
Comeback: Your hemorrhoids are flaring up again, eh?

Insult: There are no clever moves that can help you now.
Comeback: Yes there are. You just never learned them.

Insult: Now I know what filth and stupidity really are.
Comeback: I'm glad to hear you attended your family reunion.

Insult: I usually see people like you passed-out on tavern floors.
Comeback: Even BEFORE they smell your breath?

I like how in Escape from Monkey Island, the austrailian villian says some weird insults that guybrush can't figure out so every response is "what?" "huh?" "..." "eh?"

Insult swordfighting = best thing ever!
Fincham: Where are you going?
Me: I have no idea
Fincham: I meant where are you sitting. This wasn't an existential question.

Unforutnately, my experience with any of the Monkey Islands was soley through Antestarr (thanks Ante!), and I wish I was able to get into those games. It's not because of the content or the like -- far from it, as I love insult swordfighting and the talking skull head -- but I just suck SO BAD at those point-and-click adventure games of old. Same went with Sam & Max and Space Quest :(

Secret of Monkey Island. This game blew my mind, I just loved every second of it.

Curse of Monkey Island.

LEC took a risk, and it worked. Just beautiful style and design. Brilliant soundtrack. Excellent voice-casting. Puerto de Pollo, the conversation with King André, Murray, "A Pirate I was meant to be", Captain Le Chimp, etc.
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

Haha, point and click adventures can be hard because most of the puzzles use "adventure game logic" rather than real logic. In order to get anywhere in such a game you either have to do the following:

1) Randomly click on anything on the screen to see what happens
2) Randomly use or combine items with anything on the screen
3) Download and read a walkthrough

I personally did #3 for all 4 monkey island games. Escape from Monkey Island probably had the most nonsensal puzzles out of all of them.

I did all monkey islands (cept the forth) without walkthroughs

Matter of fact, the only game I ever played through with a walkthrough was Gabriel Knight I, but thats because i couldn,t figure out that god forsaken clock puzzle, or the mummies.

Also, who could forget it when your crew decides to completely ditch you and sunbathe on the deck of your ship. My favorite is definitely the dude with the hook hands and the talking tattoo. good times!

Haha yeah dude.... but you could make a catapult on the island and catapult the ship they were on. Payback!

Then, after you finished the game, it would cut to the cabin you were imprisoned in earlier, and you'd see your crew there totally clueless.

I loved escaping from that cabin, then get captured again, etc etc etc... The lock on the door would change like this:

I played through curse of monkey island again the other day. Took me six hours to do it. I forgot some of the solutions for the puzzles so it took me a bit longer than usual. I'm reinstalling escape from monkey island now. Let's see how long that'll take.

Probably the second one, although I loved the first three installments, the fourth wasn't that bad just too... wacky... kinda lost the plot with the giant robot monkey.

I remember the first time I played the first one (like, a zillion years ago) not knowing what to expect, the first line "Hi. I'm Guybrush Threepwood and I want to be a pirate." was more than enough to rise a chuckle from me, what a silly, silly name.
