My yahoo account (The mail email address I used) has been annoying recently.

Look at this! (Warning: 1600x1200 screen shot.)

Hundreds of those are from ME!

Admitedly that is my bulk mail folder. Why are that many viruses being sent to me using my address in the from field?

Somehow my email address is being put into the from field of a lot of viruses. I wonder how much other people are getting from 'me'.

The other thing that started happening today is i'm getting "failure delivery" messages from MAILER-DAEMON@yahoo.com EVERY FEW SECONDS!

It seems like my address may actually be sending out these email.

While typing this post I have recieved 6 " failure delivery" messages.

My email address is being used in the from field for a lot of viruses [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif] I dont understand why my address is being used so much. I thought these things randomly chose email addresses and put one in the to field and one in the from field with a random message.

It's just plain annoying. These faliure delivery messages are
quickly filling up my inbox.

Roll on GMail...

Block the notification address, that will give you your Inbox back. Worked when I had a a yahoo account. Hmm I think I'll go resurect that...

Just resurected my old account and I still got 6mg of space! Thats 3 times my msn addy!
Do you think anyone else has access to your account? A serious hacker would use the same address repeatedly AND have the nerve to send you virues from 'yourself'. Try changing your password and secret question.

Spammers and viruses will often send to an address, and spoof the From address to be that of the recipient. The idea being that you are more likely to let it through as it is a known address - the only address that someone with zero knowledge will be able to say is a known address to you.

Your address will probably be used to send to others as well though. That's where the delivery failure messages come from. Yahoo failing to deliver the mail will cause it to return a delivery failure message to the address that sent it. In this case, that's you. I would doubt hackers/spammers have your account login, they don't need that for the effects described - and what good would it do them? They can read al the spam that they've sent you. Whoop-dee-doo!

In other words - whack up any spam filter options you have. Unless you send mails to yourself regularly, put your address on your blacklist. That should help. A bit.

[Edit: Actually looking at the screenshot, those Delivery Failure errors aren't from yahoo - i would bet they're another form of social engineering to get you to look at them. Although they could still be from spoofed messages being blamed on you.]

Old aunts used to come up to me at weddings, poking me in the ribs and cackling, telling me, "You're next." They stopped after I started doing the same thing to them at funerals.

Well over 99% of the mail I get is junk mail. That's why I automatically get my mail delivered to my trash can, and then I just fish out the occasional proper mail.
