State O' the Union
2006-01-31, 7:20 PM #1
Sigh.....I'm getting awfully sick of these. To be perfectly honest, the only benefit these have in my eyes is seeing how divided the country is. I'm not saying one side should always cowtow to the others, however it never seems that bipartisanship is in the cards as a viable solution. Instead, we get the same old name calling and general ill will towards each other. Problem is, I don't see this ending any time soon. But for those who saw the State of the Union address, post your thoughts, comments, etc.

It's the typical State of the Union.

I always thought the Democratic / Republican Response to the SOTU address is completely WORTHLESS. I mean, what is the point???!!! The response is basically "We want to do the same thing that the Republicans/Democrats do, but *current president* SUCKS!!"

Regarding today's response, is Virginia heaven on earth or something? This guy seems to think it is.

OH MY GOD HE MENTIONED GOD! THIS MAN HATH NO SOUL! SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE GRAHHH!H!H!H!!!!!!!!!!!!! *snicker*

Im origianly from VA actually, live there until i was about 14 or so

I dont see what that has to do with anything, did i miss something in the SOTU? (didnt see whole thing)

anyway I agree, it was very typical, alot of rehetoric of course, but 2 things that reafirmed my dislike for Bush in it:

His desire to get the line item veto, which was ruled unconstitutional by federal courts and the supreme court (1998) and in my opinion is just blatantly unconstitutional in the first place

Him talking about cloning, etc. and saying "human life is something given to us by our creator" or something along those lines.

Now im not unrealistic when it comes to seperation of church and state like many are, I think there are times when the 2 go hand in hand (im not religious myself at all but)

but this being movtive for reason attempt to change laws of our country is just wrong in my opinon

The Virginia mocking is from the Democratic response to the SOTU. According to their Governor, Virignia is a model of efficiency and cooperation (At least, that is what he made it sound like).

How would the line item veto be unconstitutional? Anyways, I picked that up as being a sarcastic joke in the speech anyway. I haven't heard that seriously discussed for years. That type of power is the kind you only want "your guy" to have anyway.

Bush's State of the Union are boring to listen to. Not only is he a dull speaker (although he is a bit better at it now than 6 years ago), the state of the union is always the same crap about Iraq. Because of that, I don't bother to listen to the whole thing.

The arguments say that the line item veto makes the President too much of a legislator and violates the seperation of powers.

The speech was nothing special, even by the poor standards of the State of the Union address. Mostly vague generalities with just a couple of high points. I'm glad Bush realizes that the oil dependency needs to stop, but really, it's time we actually did something about it.

What did I learn from the SotU address?

-Even Republicans are excited when Bush finally stops talking.
-Blacks are the cause of AIDS.
-All solutions to enviromental troubles are to take place long after Bush is out of office.
-Bush can't talk to save his life.

The president needs the ability to line-item veto.

He brought that up.... and I agree.

In SotU, it's just a bunch of lip services to things that will probably never be done. One thing that pissed me off big time is Bush condemning the selling/trading of embryos. So rememember, if you're an infertile couple that is looking towards artificial insemenation, you're immoral. I'm convinced Bush isn't a Big Business Republican but is a religion right conservative.

I disagree, as said before, the argument is that it give legslative powers to the executive branch, and I totally agree with that argument

If the executive branch can modify legislation that isnt executing the law, but modifying it, which is not what the intention of the constituion was.

I listened to most of the SotU (never have seen this acronym before, it reminds me of SotE) as I was doing some work. His push for the line item veto was the only thing that caught my attention. Otherwise, everything was predictable, although I didn't expect him to remark on the relatively high portion of AIDS cases afflicting African Americans.

Opposing party responses are usually pretty dumb. Since Democrats really don't stand for anything anymore, in summary they said that Bush is wrong.
2006-02-01, 9:32 AM #25
The Line Item Veto push is going to fall flat since it was ruled UNCONSTITUTIONAL in 1998. That doesn't really make someone look good. Makes them look like they don't know a lick of VERY recent history.

Gandalf: It's a new Supreme Court, and some of the remaining justices may decide differently now that the president is a Republican. I'm sure the administration is aware of Clinton v. City of New York, so I can only assume the line item veto was mentioned as a signal that the administration is going to revisit a lot of cases that were decided unfavorably, now that the court is stacked in their favor. Either that, or it's a soft lobbed opportunity for the Supreme Court to prove their independance.

This seems like the most likely case. Bush looked like he was having trouble keeping a straight face when he brought up the line-item veto.

That's one of the main things I've noticed about Bush. He always says "By 2018 (or some other date in the faaaaar future) that the United States will do this because I told them to."

Whatever.

I think you're confused. An embryo is a fertilzed egg, a living being. So, artificial insemenation isn't being looked down on. You're looking at egg/sperm separated.

It was 6 v 3, with Rehnquist in the majority and O'Conner dissenting. Presumably the other justices won't have changed their minds in eight years, so even if Alito and Roberts vote in favor of the line item veto, it would still be 5 to 4, and it would still be unconstitutional.

I think the correct term, and certainly what he meant, is invitro fertilization where multiple fetuses are created outside of the womb and a number inserted. I have always seen an ethical issue with that practice. Note, I'm not expressing my opinion of the issue I believe exists.
