Should I donate blood after class today?
2006-02-03, 5:03 AM #1
I think today there is a blood drive going on at my school. Im wondering if i should donate. (now this isnt a question of me being nervous... im just wondering if im up for it)

The only thing it would effect is my ability to lift things with that arm for a little bit. I havent ever been dizzy after donating so that shouldnt be a problem.

To conclude:

Convince me to donate

and

have you ever donated blood before?

They gave me free soda and chips when I donated blood.

I gave it away to somebody else though. The chips and soda, that is. And I guess the blood too.

:(

Oh, and yes, I wasn't able to go to the gym for "24 hours" they said. Sad times :(

Well I guess its a good deed. If you need more than that... *shrugs* Might get 10$. Thats what I got when I donated blood.

It depends. For instance, I donated plasma a few times last year. The place I went to was VERY sketchy. Many people that looked like they shot up from time to time. But apart from that, it wasn't that bad. Took about an hour (for plasma, they had to take the blood, seperate the components, keep the plasma, and put the remainder back in) and they had us watch movies the whole time (unfortunatly, one of the times it was the Planet of the Apes remake). I got about $20 out of it each time I donated, and there really wasn't a lot of work needed to be able to donate.

I've never donated blood before mainly because I'm too damn skinny. If I were to give blood, I'd probably pass out.

Having to watch the Planet of the Apes remake is not worth 20$.

Ask them if gay people are allowed to donate blood. I've seen in two shows where they haven't been allowed to donate because they're gay.

Maybe you should ask them *after* you donate, though.

I would have told them to keep it.

But I also wouldn't have let someone in a sketchy place draw blood. Not without a fight, anyway.

I have never donated. I have too low blood pressure.

I wouldn't mind donating to a hot vampire, though (as long as it's countess, not count...).

I might be able to stay conscious, but the low blood sugar/pressure doesn't help. My mom finally unregistered, because she was turned away too many times in a row for that :p

Giving blood is generally a good thing. I have friends that pay rent with plasma donations only. Two to three times a month, $50 or so each time.

Personally, I'm not allowed to give blood, ever. See, I was born in Poland and spent my first three years there, and Poland has a different vaccination set than the United States, especially the BCG vaccine.

Yeah, I can't donate blood either. Lived in Germany when I was little, thus I cannot because of the Mad Cow scare.

Pretty sure that if you're gay and sexually active, you're not allowed to give blood.

I tried earlier this year, I wasn't allowed because:
1) I'd been in England at the tail end of the mad cow period.
2) I'd been in China this past summer, and was therefore a malaria risk.

I'm pretty sure that's not true. They would just test it first.

Yeah, I think you should donate. I was goign to but I was too lazy to crutch my gimp arse all the way up there to do it. I'm such a wonderful person, I know. I'll do it next time unless a friend throws me down the stairs again. :p

Uh yea, so i figured out why I was questioning it :p

it was 8am and I was all "blah"

I ended up going, just got back in fact.

It wasnt that bad, i dont think ive ever gone to the American Red Cross for donating before though.

The donation part wasnt bad at all (except for that stupid finger pricker >:( )

And I definatley think i saw Naythan there (so naythan, if youre lurking, POST and tell me! I tried to catch up, (and if it was you) you dissappeared in the SAU fairly quickly)

They had this thing called Double Red Cell Donors. I wasnt eligible for it, but bascally what they do is take more (i think) and then give you back some of your blood or salene. Dont quote me on it cause im not entirely sure.

Vin- Regarding homosexuality, there was only one question they asked me about that. something along the lines of "In the past # weeks have you had any form of sexual relations with another man" or something like that. I dont know if that would prevent you from donating though. They might consult with a doctor, or label it. Chances are it wouldnt matter.

back to drinking water and recovering!

Well, I've seen on two TV shows where a gay guy hasn't been allowed to donate because they have a higher risk of disease/HIV. Maybe I'll look at the site...

I should go donate blood again, but request a tag be added to it, saying, "To be used to save pretty ladies' life, and to be prescribed with my phone number attached."

Quote:
You may not donate if you:

1. have cold or flu symptoms on the day of donation or do not feel well
2. have ever used a needle to take nonprescription drugs
3. had hepatitis after the age of 11
4. ever had a positive Hepatitis B or C test
5. are at risk of catching or spreading the AIDS virus.

Taken from United Blood Services

I think #5 is the excuse they use to exclude people who have had gay sex.

Quote:
12. Why does the Australian Red Cross Blood Service not accept donations from men who have had sex with men (gay and bi-sexual men)?

State and Territory legislation and requirements of the Code of Good Manufacturing Practice for Human Blood and Tissues mandate donor selection on the basis of certain risk behaviours. The exclusion of men who have had sex with men in the past 12 months is based on the statistically higher incidence of some blood borne diseases amongst such groups, and on the existence of ‘window period’ infections. In this context, the ‘window period’ is the time between contraction of a disease and the capacity of testing to detect it in the human body. Such deferrals are in accordance with international practice.

The Australian Red Cross Blood Service is motivated only by the requirement to supply the safest possible blood to the Australian community. There is no other judgement being made, and we urge all who are precluded from participating as blood donors to consider other ways of serving the community through voluntary activity with the Australian Red Cross.

Taken from The Australian Red Cross

Of course, that's absolutely rediculous, because anybody who has had or is having sex is at risk of catching or spreading HIV.

Damn straight you should! I've donated three times (I think).

Ya, the blood's not worth the risk of giving someone AIDS. Really they should exclude anyone who sleeps around, but I don't know how they'd do that. But I think homosexual activity gives you a higher chance of getting it.

Question #27: Are you a slut? _______
2006-02-03, 12:36 PM #37
I would donate, but I cant.

Helping someone else is something I'm always in for.

Passing out and feeling sick for two days, however, isn't.
2006-02-03, 1:59 PM #40
Yes, you should donate. Giving blood is good, especially if you're one of those rare blood-type people.

As for me, I think I may have donated at some point, but I don't remember. Laziness is probably the biggest factor that's stopped me before. Do as I say though, not as I do <_<
