Just got back. Wow. Wow wow wow. Awesome.
We left South Carolina via car about 4 PM, got to Washington at 12:10 AM. We did a walking tour of the Mall real quick to see some of the new monuments and to see some of the more famous ones.
We actually got into the line at 1:20. They estimated that 5,000 people per hour were walking through the capitol. We waited until 6 AM to go into the rotunda and view the President lying in State. I just got home. Havn't slept a wink.
For those of you that have never gotten a chance to experience something of this magnitude - it was absolutely incredible. To see how many people, of all age, race, culture, NATIONALITY, handicap (I saw *dozens* of elderly people in wheelchairs, out in the early early morning to pay respects.
This sends two very clear messages to me. One, it is amazing to see how many people this President touched. Whether or not you agree with the man or his policies is irrelevant - this crowd was amazing. The dedication and determination of all of these people to see their late President was simply breath taking.
The second thing that it sent to me was this - the complete out pouring of love that this nation has shown to Nancy Reagan - from the man who shouted "We love you Nancy, God Bless You, Nancy" as the casket was taken to the Capitol, and the applause that followed, to the signs that littered Washington, and even hung in the windows of congressmen's private offices - it shows me that there is still some good in this nation.
All in all, I think what I'm getting at is that I've never been more proud to be an American. God bless the USA.
