Using computer at home as proxy to bypass school's blocks.
2006-02-08, 11:29 AM #1
Well it seems my school as blocked any access to Myspace (where all my pics are at for web design class) and Google image search. I really need these sites to do things quickly and effieciently.

Does anyone know if there is a way to use my PC at home as a proxy? IndianProxy and all those others sites have been blocked. But I know that if I can connect to my home IP at school, I can bypass it. The proxy at school will think I'm viewing a website, while actaully i'll be on others. It will just notice my PC at home's IP and not the site.

Anyone know how to do this?

if your connections are fast enough, remote desktop.

I got Road Runner cable with a router with all it's ports opened. Remote desktop..hmmm. I'll research it, any other methods?

http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm

It says LAN, but I would wager it didn't say internet because it is not designed for high amounts of use.

Don't know if that will work, but it should.

Yeah, that analogx proxy will work, just forward whatever port you are using for the HTTP proxy out to the internet, and then set up the computer at school to connect through the proxy with your home computers IP address and the port you chose.

Keep in mind your school is probably blocking outbound connections on most ports. You should run the prorgam on 80 oe 443 since they are bound to be accessable.

I use Ultr@VNC (remote desktop). I am also on RoadRunner cable, and it runs well enough. Of course it's kind of slow, but it's great for file transfers. The Java applet (also has a viewer client) has a built in file transfer feature, so you can browse your hard drive at home, and transfer it to yourself at school. GREAT if you forget papers like I do all the time :)

Free, kickass, and easy to use. Pretty easy to configure too if you know how to configure a router to open ports 5800 and 5900 (you can change the ports if you want)

Any of the proxy software mentioned is the way to go for you. While we're on the topic of remote desktop though, logmein.com has done wonders for me in terms of ease and speed.

The second one could get past Bess, and I could go on Myspace.

I just use Portable Firefox on my flashdrive to get around Bess. (blocker)

I have it (almost) completely disguised as Internet Explorer. (much to my disgust... ) But no one notices it. If anyone want's a copy of it give me your email.

Hey, I have a trick for Google images, it works at my school, but I dunno about yours.

Go to google. Click images. Go to advanced search, and type in your desired topic, and then hit search. For some reason, going to advanced search works but the normal one doesn't.

If you can't even get to the images.google page at all, then obviously my post is useless. If you can get to the page, but can't search, the advanced search trick might work.
Very funny Scotty. Now beam down my clothes.

Actually, the biggest trick for google images is this.

Change the beginning of the URL from images.google.com to images.l.google.com

Bypasses BESS in my county :D

You can also use google's language tools as a proxy. Just tell it to translate from some other language to english and then put the page you want in. Since there aren't any words in the other language, it will stay in english, but be proxied.

:D
