I bought a guitar from drizzt a few months ago for $75. It was an Ibanez Gio that sold for $200 new. So for a month or so I was like "Yay! Guitar is fun!" Then I was asked by a friend if I would like to play bass for a band. Okay. So I started bringing my bass home, and eventually I left my guitar at the drummers house (where we have band practice) so it didn't get in the way at my house. Well a few weeks ago the guitar just kind of *poof* vanished. Come to find out, one of the drummers friends Bill took the guitar. Cory (the drummer) insisted Bill was just borrowing it, and that I would get it back soon. I trust Cory and I didn't play guitar anymore so I dropped the matter. Recently I decided that I was going to purchase a new bass guitar, so I thought I could sell my guitar to a friend, who was willing to pay me MORE than full price that I paid for it ($100). The bass that I wanted sold for about $200. It's a Rogue Violin Bass and it's very sexy. I have $60 in my wallet at the moment, so if I sold my guitar, I would only have to pay another $40 which I could easily put on my credit card. Okay, so I call Cory and ask him to get my guitar and he tells me that isn't going to happen. So I ask him what the problem is. Come to find out, a long time ago in a basement far far away Bill thought that the guitar he 'borrowed' was a permenant trade for a bass I was borrowing from Cory (which just happened to be Bills). So then Bill wanted Cory to buy back MY guitar which he pretty much stole from me or else Bill said he would sell the Guitar to Guitar Center. Nice. Well today I call Bill and tell him he needs to give me my guitar back. Well he told me he sold it a LONG time ago, so I was like "AGHHHH!!!!" I call my friend Cory who tells me that Bill didn't sell ANYTHING yet, and the guitar was in Bills trunk of his car. Holy crap. So I call back Bill and I get no answer. I get ahold of him about an hour later and go figure, he just got back from guitar center. He got $100 for my guitar. Piss. So I decide that I should just sell the bass that I was using (his bass) to Guitar Center and get some phat stacks of my own. After all, Bill sold my guitar even after he knew there was no trade and what he did was stealing. I hoped I could get about $100 for the bass, because even though it had some paint chips taken out of it, and it now only cost $180 new, it had some VERY nice Seymour Duncan pickups that I put in it. So I head on over to the nearest Guitar Center (20 mins away), and I walk in and I tell them I am looking to sell and they say they aren't interested. Holy crap. So I call Cory and tell him this story and he tells me to go on over to the NEXT closest Guitar Center, which is about 30 mins away from me, because they will buy anything there. He also thinks I could get $100 for the bass, if not more because of the pickups. On top of everything, Guitar Center doesn't sell Rogue products so if I want my violin bass I need to order it online. I hate people.

Wow that sucks dude. Sounds like this bill guys is a butt hole. Did you get anything for his bass or not? yeah and like seb said, i definatly would'nt leave your instrument at some one elses house unless they are good freinds.

I didn't have enough space in my room for my bass, my guitar, and my amp to all live in peace and harmony, so I moved my guitar to the place where I practice with my band. The guitar should have been safe in the band practice room. Noone really goes in there but us when we practice. How do I deserve it? The vocalists guitar, our guitarists two guitars, my bass, a broken bass, drums, two microphones, a sound system, my wireless setup, and a crap load of amps are in that basement, so why was it stupid to put my guitar down there?

He is a good friend. He's our drummer. I trust him with all my stuff, and even after this I still do. I usually didn't mind if any of Corys friends played with our instruments, because they all know what they are doing and for the most part they are all good people. Also, I didn't get anything for his bass yet. I need to go down to the other guitar center. Today is my moms birthday, and I didn't want to spend all day away from home.

I'd strongly recommend something better than Rogue. STRONGLY, I say. Their equipment has a tendancy to sometimes wear out, and fast.

I'll build you a custom bass for $300.

I've read atleast 5 different sites with tons of reviews on this bass, and I keep hearing all good reviews. It's supposedly sturdy and it lasts a long time. The average rating is about an 8.4/10 on most sites I go to. The only bad thing I hear is that the bass comes with cheap strings. I could care less, because I know I'll put new ones on it once I get it.

I'm sorry for trusting a few hundred reviews from people who actually own the bass over you... Oh holy guitar master Seb.

take it however you like it. but internet reviews are not to be trusted. and i don't expect you to beleive me without trying either, but good grief, there are great brands out there you've never heard of probably because you aren't -looking- that make quality instrument rivalizing even with the big names.

but of course, you won't care really, because we all know wood grade and neck angle and electronic quality are all irrelevent in choosing an instrument. it's the name maaan.

oh, and of course, those internet kids who have been playing for just a year but can play all of les claypool's songs have the ultimate answer and -know- this bass rocks more.

How? The bass wasn't under your control the entire time. Despite your argument, that's the only way you would not deserve it, is if it was under your control the entire time.

And personally, I'd trust Seb on this seeing as how it's his profession to know these things. Just me.

I concur. I bought a silvertone guitar awhile back and everyone on the net said it was awesome. How wrong they were. It was the biggest piece of crap ever. You could'nt even stand up and play it with out the neck being sucked to the floor.

Jay Turser <- Any good?

2006-02-10, 7:30 PM #15
for your price range Jay's are pretty great. their 5 string bass has actually a pretty nice neck and body. the only place where jay cuts corners is on the pickups.

i don't know how much you're willing to spend, but you could take a quick look at warwick or godin. peavey makes some reaaally awesome basses for a low price (my drummer owns a 5 string peavey cirrus, neck through, active pickups and Para-EQ. so many tones out of this baby, around 800$CAD )

oh. and don't think i'm ragging on you. i'm just trying to avoid you wanting to change that bass as soon as you get good.

I have about $3,000, but most of that money is being spent on a trip to Italy this april. So I am looking for a bass around $200 - $300. The violin and the semi-hollow basses are what I am looking for. I was thinking maybe THIS instead of the Rogue? Also, I'm not that worried about the pickups so much. A friend of mine gets me good deals on pickups ^_^.

Yeah, sorry about being a wanker. I was just kind of pissed after that moron sold my guitar today, and I'm still a bit edgy. *hug*

it's not worth it to change stock pickups as far as $$$ goes. get a good bass with good pickups, sleep easy.

why do you want a hollow though? any particular reason?

http://www.godinguitars.com/godinfreewaybassp.htm

http://www.godinguitars.com/godina4p.htm

just FYI.

i think the solid body electrics go around 500-600CAD here (we sell the Freeway Classic and Freeway Floyd guitar at 500$ so basses must not be all that expensive) I own a Godin (exit 22) , i work with it everyday, and everyday it surprises me. i paid 500$ for the thing and it has a limitless supply of tones. Godin woods are also -very- high quality for the price.

I might sound like a salesman but I was ragging (maybe 2-3 years ago) on Godin before i tried them. it's an enlightening experience to play with one. I don't know how available they are to you, but try one out if you get the chance.

Cool, thanks. As for why I am so interested in semi-hollow and violin basses. When I was at Guitar Center today I was playing this:

The weight of it, the feel of it, and the lighter sound of it was awesome. It sounded so jazzy and nice, but at the same time I could totally see it rocking out. Also I really really like the look of the bass itself.
Jay Turser <- Any good?
I have a JT-134, and a Jay Jr. Acoustic Guitar. I love both do death. Both of them have the sound and build of guitars at least double their price. My JT-134 is just amazing. Admittedly, the pickups DO have some quirks, and maybe not as full of a tone as I personally like, but nobody else who isn't a gear-head can tell the difference. You can put in some new pickups if you like and it will be one of the sweetest things you will ever play.

I'm thinking of putting a Bigsby Vibrato tailpiece on mine.

But anyway, my guitar teacher only uses JT now, he does club gigs regularly. He's got himself a Telecaster which I swear sounds true to the Fender, a sweet Jazz box, a blonde Les Paul, and a SG. Not only that but the store we used to have lessons in sold a lot of Turser so I played a lot of them. They're really, really nice guitars, and when you factor in the price I will take them over Gibson, Ibanez, etc. unless there is a real specific guitar I want.

If the guitars suit your taste and playing style (neck shape, looks, sound etc.) go for it.

Spe should write Cliff Notes. He's good at summerizing and conciseness. (If you're wondering, I only read one or two sentances before I got lost.)

As far I can find, visually, its the same damn thing
While researching I've found mention of a warehouse of them that were a different brand (possibly the one I have) that was bought and turned into Rogues

Honest to freaking monkeys, the only difference is that says Rogue on the top and mine has Series 10
