I've been reading Book IV of Stephen King's Dark Tower series (Also known as the Gunslinger series). There's a portion where they are riddling a crazy sentient suicidal train for their lives.

There's lots of good riddles in that section.

And a few are ones I've heard throughout the years.

Darkness doesn't even make sense as an answer to that riddle.

Sampson in the Bible said that, but I never figured it out. :(

Cheater! But on another note: I'm having trouble getting through the Susannah sidestory. It's not bad, per say. I just don't think it's that great. I'm on 240 or so. It goes until at least 350.

But I'm pushing through! The first three were /astounding/.

I finished the fifth book and couldn't start the sixth. I have trouble keeping on reading for a while. Plus, I heard from a friend who read them all that the ending of the series is just awful and will make you want to kill yourself, so I'm passing. :)

[EDIT: Which means that horrible things happen to the good guys, apparently. Not that it's an actual bad ending.]
DO NOT WANT.

I was afraid of that. Is the fifth any good?

Brilliant response.

Yeah, river.

The head of a river is where the river originates, the foot? I think, is where it spills into a larger body of water (i.e. a bay, an ocean.)

Another:

Three people go to a hotel and get a room for $30. They each pay $10. After they go to their room the manager realizes that he overcharged them, and that the room was supposed to cost $25. He gives $5 to the bellboy to return to the three people.

The bellboy realizes that $5 is difficult to split among three people, so he pockets $2 and then gives $1 to each of the three people.

So now each person has paid $9 (the original $10 minus the $1 that was returned). That means they've paid a total of $27, plus the $2 for the tip, is $29. Where's the extra dollar?

30-5=25 (What the room really costs)
5-2=3 (What the guys got)
25+3=28 (What they got+what they paid)
28+2=30 (What they got+what they paid+what the bellboy got)
Just math the dollar back into existence if you have to.

Just found this on google while trying to find a riddle:
The following night two friends check into the same motel. Once again the clerk charges them $30, or $15 per person. After the clerk remembers the total rate is only $25 he sends the bellhop upstairs with five $1 bills to pay the two friends back. The bellhop knows he got away with larceny once so he tries it again. But this time he pockets $3 and returns $2 to the hotel guests ($1 per guest). So each of the two guests got $1 back from their original $15. Therefore each paid $14 which is a total payment of $28 for the room. Now the bellhop has $3, the guests paid $28, for a total of $31....THERE'S THE MISSING DOLLAR!!!!

-I dunno about the others.
2006-02-12, 8:25 PM #71
... that's the same one you just answered, but worded differently?

An easy way to think of that one anyways is that you're supposed to SUBTRACT three from $28, not ADD $3 .. that would make 25, which is what the room SHOULD cost (except the bellhop has that 3)

No, the numbers are in order. How are they in order? Using what <noun>.

I can't hint much more than that. Think about the order they are in, and then think about what would use something like that.

I beleive it's supposed to be a humorous answer to the riddle that turns the same fiddly addition and subtraction back on it.

If it weren't for the 99 I'd say you have a MIN heap, but the 99 is screwing that up. I'm stumped.
