what's a good free one? for windows.

I use WS_FTP, but it's an older version that can be "convinced" to let you use it for free if you answer the questions correctly (you are still a student using this for educational purposes, right? ;) ). I was going to upload it to my server and post a link, but I can't get on right now.

So, I Googled it for you:

I also use WinSCP which is also free.

Does WS_FTP still leave log-files in the directories it's uploading?

SCP & SFTP > FTP

I use WinSCP for SCP and SFTP.

When I used FTP I used SmartFTP because it's the only program that worked behind a proxy correctly.

what's wrong with using dos? And at that, you're using windows... why not explorer? Not the best program, but it works.

I personally use FlashFXP, but not free :)

I'd go with FileZilla for a free one. It's great

When I was on windows, I used filezilla. Since I never use windows anymore, I always use scp.

All the suggestions thus far have been good. I would personally recommend FileZilla or WinSCP over the others, though. I've used WS_FTP and SmartFTP and I prefer FileZilla/WinSCP to them, but they will all get the job done.

For regular FTP, explorer can be ok. I've had problems with larger transfers, so I'll usually go with a commercial program instead. Most of the time, I'll just use ftp.exe from the command line in Windows.

YES.

(I use it cuz when I posted files for massassi I was directed to get it .. then I got into php-ing and stuff and used it often. Very useful)
