Washington DC

I have just decided a few minutes ago that I am going to Washington DC with a friend of mine on June 21st. What sort of interesting, non-historical/educational things are there to do? I know about all the monuments and museums and things of that nature, but what actual fun stuff is there to do? Also, who lives near there who wants to put us up for a few days? ...you could get murdered!

Seriously, the murder rate there is absolutely insane...from what I'm told there are parts of the city you just don't go to if you like continuing to live (and this wasn't said in the empty threat way that every one says about every big city, apparently there are CHUDs or something once you venture away from the mall area.)

Yay for ignorance!
Yes, like any large city, there are people that have radical views, and there are people that have bad circumstances and like to kill other people, just like New York, Los Angelos or Chicago.

Washington is a great town, you can do alot of things, in and around the areas. Theres alot of great concerts in the area (Washington and Baltimore), at small clubs.
I live 30 mintues from washington, but Im afraid I can not hook you up with some living space.

Washington DC, however, has the highest homicide per capita rate in America (in 2002 and 2003, the website has no update on 2004): http://www.safestreetsdc.com/subpages/murdercap.html If you'll take the time to read that page, you'll also find it quite reliable. The 2002 homicides per 100,000 residents in Washington DC was 45.8, while the figures for the cities you mentioned were: New York at 7.3, Los Angeles at 17.5 and Chicago at 22.2.

Of course common sense will get you far in terms of not getting murdered, but Darko's post was based on fact (if you'll re-read his post you'll also notice that the "...you could get murdered!" remark was in jest).

In most, if not every big city there ARE indeed places that are best avoided, especially if you seem like a tourist.
