I think the star is the blue part in the middle; the rest is the layers of hydrogen gas that it fired off. That thing is friggin HUGE.

My favourite picture is this one; showing the size of the Andromeda Galaxy compared to the full Moon if we were able to see it:

So all we need are super-sensitive eyes and the sky would look like something from a sci-fi movie. (of coure the full moon is probably tens of millions of times brighter, so it wouldn't look exactly like that, but you know)
