How can one be the best and mediocre?

Recently, I heard some upperclassmen talking about applying to MS for co-ops and how difficult and testing the selection process is. If Microsoft can have (and probably does have) the best developers and designers in the world and can sufficiently finance any projects or expansions with loads of money without worry, how can they release software with critical flaws? Why should we bother with other operating systems and platforms if they ideally could bring the best out of anything?

How can one be the best and mediocre in so many respects at the simultaneously?

Just because their programmers are great doesn't mean that they can collaborate and make completely bug-free software. But I understand what you mean. :p
