I Graduated!
2004-06-11, 11:12 AM #1
So, as of 12:00 EST today, I am a graduate of High School. Twelve years of schooling and now I'm finally FINISHED with this part of it.

Now I just have to figure out what to do with the several hundred (over at least 600, I know that much) dollars I've recieved in checks, and what to do next.

So... To make this more or less legit, what should I do now? And sending each of you money is NOT an option. It's mine... My own... My... Precious...

Actually, that was one of the things I was considering. I do have a system in mind that I've been putting off for awhile now. About the only thing I probably wouldn't be able to get right now would be the Apple Flat Panel Display I want to replace my 21" CRT. But that could wait.

How much do you want to sell your 21" CRT for? Because I'm looking to buy. Seriously.

I could probably help you out, hook you up with what you need for about 6-700 bucks, probably. That is if you want to go the semi-expensive route.

The apple flatscreen? Why does everyone like those? They SUCK! Their contrast is horrendous, their refresh time sucks, and not to mention, they require special adapters for PCs. (And they look ugly, but meh)

I'm looking to replace it becuase it's old and dying. It was given to me about 5 years ago, and before that, spent another 4 years or so in a basement running a server. Always on. So an image got burned into it. It's faint for the most part, but you can really see it when the screen is completely white. Recently it's started flickering while on. So yea, if you want to dish out 700 bucks for a dying 21" CRT that weighs... well... more than I'd care to carry into a FedEx place and trust them to ship without busting it further, be my guest.

It needs replacing, just not immediately.

Cool Matty, I want one of those becuase frankly, those are the best damn flat screens I've EVER run across that display color accurately reguardless of where you turn your head. I very much so like them. And I'm more than willing to dish out a few bucks more for an adapter to use one. As for the appearance, with the case and other accessories I have in mind, it'll fit right in. Again, like I said, that's a purchase that is still off in the distance.

Nevermind then :P

But yah the apple displays are far far too expensive. Get a Samsung for less and be happier. Trust me. You'll have enough left over for an iPod [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

I have a monitor that's dying. it's about 8.5 years old. It's an old Nec Multisync C500, and it was a damn good monitor back in the day.

It gets really dim and I have to use adobe gamma loader to artificially boost the gamma beyond what the little dials under the screen will give me.

Apple monitors suck....

Get either a SHARP, or a Sony monitor..

Dell also makes a good one.

SHARP and Sonys are too expensive, or low-quality. Unless you go UBER-high dollar. Toshiba is where it's at, sucka.

Ha. I completely forgot about that. I would've gotten to it in another 6 months or so...

Sony can die. Their hardware is so overpriced much of the time it's just LIKE Apple. Only I think Apple puts out superior hardware. Dell? No thanks... I've never ever liked their displays. Never bothered to look at a Sharp. I looked at a few Toshibas today and wasn't impressed. Of course, the layout CompUSA had for the variety of flat panels flat out sucked. One of the employees walked past and asked if he could help me with anything and I was like, "Unless you can make all of these display one STILL image, move them all so they're in a line and not at different levels, and correctly set them up so the iamge isn't being placed off screen, no, you can't help me." Granted, that's alot to ask, but still, the way those were setup sucked badly. And he asked.

Congrats to all the grads, both High school and College. I'm still looking at completing my BS in 2006; so I've still got a while.

As for the money, I'd reccomend saving it, at least until a short while into your first semester. Colleges look upon their students as people they should milk for all the money they can get; you don't know when you'll be hit with some fee or other, that isn't covered by any scholarship or family relative, or the loan you got.

After then, I'd reccomend spending it on something that would truly be of use to you, most likely a computer upgrade. I've given up on travelling to stores to buy things; they never have the good stuff, and they often charge 200% of the hardware's actually value (my local stores will gladly sell me 128MB of PC2100 DDR for $80US!). I've taken a liking to a site called www.tigerdirect.com . They seem to be the cheapest, fastest, and most reliable of online hardware sellers. I was rather pleased that the parts for my Athlon 64 rig arrived 3 days after ordering. The total bill came up to about $600, and it arrived in three days, with only normal shipping.
