Freeware Antivirus?
2004-06-12, 8:02 PM #1
Recently we set up a shiny new fresh copy of xp on my friend's computer, and as some of you may recall dl'd the updates and got the critical updates and sp1 cd from ms, and got those all installed.

Currently all that remains is to get a reliable antivirus suite set up, as the only way she can get service is through AOL [no comments about this, please].

She has a copy of Norton 7, however it seems to give some warning about may not work correctly with XP or something of that nature. Now there are a couple questions there. One, how much does that really mean, like would it run without fscking the system sorta thing or whatever.

Alternately, we need to find a freeware suite to install, one that of course gets properly frequently updated and is reliable and all that sort of stuff.

She's been offline for about a month now all told i think, so she's getting a bit twitchy, so any ideas would be most welcome.

AVG anti virus is a good tool, it runs for a month before you have to stop using it however. Thats the only one I can think of.

I have AGV, and it's sex. It doesn't ware out, either... don't know what MBeggar is talking about. I must say, AGV is simply amazing. It's gotten everything out of my computer that's ever done anything bad, and protects otherwise. I've also got another firewall, sygate. Works wonders, as well.

AVG is gloriously good, just make sure you get the Free Version, not the trial. It's the awesome.

Catsby has found TrendMicro's online virus scan very useful in the past. Catsby gives it two thumbs up.

However, Catsby has never used the actual TrendMicro antivirus program- only the online one because Catsby found his Norton CD [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Catsby has heard good things about AVG but cannot comment on it himself sice he has never used it.

AVG is great. I wouldn't stop with an anti-virus application. I'm guessing that you're using XP Home? I'd also install a good firewall (like others have suggested above. ZoneAlarm is really good (although past versions have given it a bad name, the latest version(s) are great). Adaware and Spybot are also highly recommended. I'd also recommend getting your friend started with an alternative browser such as Firefox, a good e-mail app such as Thunderbird, and maybe even a spam blocker if you don't fully trust those that are built in (such as SpamPal). You may disregard those last few programs if that leads to problems using AOL (I've never used it so I don't know exactly how things work with it). DCOMbobulator couldn't hurt to get either if you need help disabling DCOM.

I could go on all day, so I better stop now...

AVG wouldn't detect this virus I had the other day, symantec had info on the thing on their site, but AVG wasn't detecting it.

Besides, I've always wondered what the deal with a pretty much fully functional free virus scanner run out of the czech republic is... Every time I update the definitions, it seems to be a couple of megs.
