Has copy protection gone too far?

Yes.

Read This thread at rage3d.

This new copy protection installs drivers onto your computer which cannot be removed.

That's just taking things too far.

Discuss.

I wouldn't blame anyone for warezing a program that has stuff like that. Only a good release group would find a way to get rid of the protection, and a company that employs such intrusive methods (which are basically undocumented virus-like features) does not deserve to make money, IMO.

Such protection wouldn't stop a good iso ripper.

I don't know how far you looked into that thread but on the last page (I skipped to it) there is a link to an uninstall utility that removes them.

But regardless of that, they shouldn't have been installing things without explicit consent, apparently there was no mention of it in the EULA either.

Off topic drivel: Is anybody else losing a bit of faith in PC gaming? High-priced buggy games that may or may not work even if you bought them legally. It's almost enough to make me consider I console if I didn't think that this sort of thing will eventually carry over to consoles now that they have hard drives, net connections and downloadable content.

This one day I went to change my password, but being the clever chappy that I am, I accidently typed the new pw into the e-mail address bar and clicked submit, hence the slightly modified new user name. Go me and my awesome computer skills.

Just... no. I'd be pretty pissed to find this kind of thing on my computer (and there probably are things like it). Forceably reinstalling crap on someone else's pc is a privacy violation, plain and simple. I don't imagine too many people look kindly upon not having control of what's installed on their pc. I sure as hell don't.

I know that you can burn ps2 games on your pc. It's not something the average newbie can do, but it can be done.

so, yeah, I would expect to see increased copy protection of some kind on console games in the near future.

Garbage like this makes me glad that I 1) dont play PC games anymore, and 2) use Linux. This **** will be the death of PC gaming, mark my words.

I don't see why we have CD Checks anymore. They did them back in the days cause there was no way to download them off the internet. Now-a-days, anyone can get the CD from online. And, most games install everything from the CD anyways, so the CD is really useless.

Also, more people would buy the games rather than pirate em if the games weren't $50 a pop. If they were $30, heck even $20, everyone would be buying them. The companies would probably sell more, and make more money from this than $50 games. Most of the games now aren't even worth $50, such as Enter The Matrix, Uru, etc. If they were $20 or $30, people wouldn't feel like they wasted thier money on a complete piece of ****. And, you can't return games because they were bad anymore.

Not as bad as the bs Elicense pulls. Up to and including resident process, hidden system files, undeleteable files, and the kicker-- narfed registry entries [unicode and NUL chars in them] that freak out regedit so you can't view or change or delete them.. whee.. nothing like fscking with the system registry.

Oh it does carry over to consoles already. I had the misfortune of buying the gamecube versions of NBA2k3...it has a horrible crash bug in Dynasty mode that essentially renders it, well, ****ed. Of course being a console game there is no way to patch it, so at least PC games still have that edge.

Anyway yeah I agree completely about PC games. It's depressing. The MMORPG genre in particular has been pretty much completely ruined for me because of incomplete/buggy release builds.

This is just plain stupid. We spend our HARD EARNED MONEY on a computer, and people everywhere just has to get their software into them. And when I pay that kind of money, I don't need people hacking into/installing software/sending viruses, etc. and wrecking my computer. It should be a Right that we should have.... Console games sometimes ship with bugs, such as NBA2k3. But the companies always fix the problem, and will replace your copy for free. Such as with NBA2k3.

As for CD Checks, Epic has the right idea. UT2003/4 don't use CD checks or copy protection anymore, after you patch it. (The game patches, not copy protection "patches") It was done in UT2003 in the final patch, and UT2004 has it in its latest patch.

The MMORPG genre is a mass beta test.

Besides the MMORPGS having bugs and such, there are alot of FPS and other games that are buggy or don't sell well cause they are plain outright stupid.
I know that the Soldner beta was really really buggy and I don't see how they could have perfected it for release.
Also, games such as Kuma are really retarded and will not sell well for the fact that the total gameplay idea was never fully developed.
These are games we waste $50 on, and we can't return them to the stores!
