ATI or MATROX?
2004-06-12, 1:15 PM #1
Quick nerdly question a second.

I'm still using an old Voodoo Banshee card. My brother took pity on my and gave me a Matrox card and an ATI card. The ATI was assembled in 2000 and the Matrox was assmembled in 1998. The ATI uses 3dFX, I think. I don't know what the Matrox uses.

Which is better? Which should I install? I play SimCity 4 primarily. Thanks.

Probably the ATI, but just to be sure, what models are they?

The ati will not have anything to do with 3dfx. 3dfx was the company which made voodoo cards before they were bought out by nvidia.

You'll probably do better with the ATI card since Matrox cards are designed for 3d animation/moddeling iirc.

The only way to know for sure is to try them both and see [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

That's just it, I don't know. I have the drivers for the ATI and it says "Rage," so I assume it's a rage series one. However, the Matrox one I don't have drivers for, so I haven't a clue what model it is. Getting drivers will take a bit of research. I'll see what I can find out tonight.

Thanks

Wow. More posts as I type. Thanks all. I'll try the ATI. I'm sure it'll be much better than my Voodoo Banshee.

if it was made in 2000 it's probably a Rage 128 based card which isn't all that great but better than what you have in there

yeah, definitely go with the ATI Rage card; I remember the Voodoo Banshee.. I went from no 3d card to that "voodoo 1.5" card, to a geforce2 mx..

Not that it matters, but neither of those cards provide enough 3D acceleration to make a damn bit of difference. The latest game it would even effect would probably be UT, and that's stretching it. The Matrox would be the worst, but the ATI really isn't any better.

compared to a voodoo banshee it will make a noticable difference... plus he probably has it in a slow system to begin with

You could always pay 50 bucks for a 5200/9200. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Catsby says that buying a new card would probably be pointless. He says that if the computer has a voodoo banshee then it must be quite old and would not gain much performance from a new card due to severe bottlenecks from the CPU and the memory.

It also depends on what the AGP speed is in the ol' box of tricks.

Catsby says that if it was running a voodoo banshe that chances are it does not have an agp port.
