Why are carrots cooked?
2006-02-26, 2:29 PM #1
Can someone explain this? Once cooked, they lose 99.9 percent of their flavour. Why not just serve them like they are and enjoy the carroty goodness?

Cause some old people can't chew the 100% goodness and soften them down.

The same goes for any vegetable, I think. Broccoli is awesome when it's raw, but once microwaved it's horrible. Although you can grill it on the barbeque; that's nice.

microwaving anything pretty much destroys any nuturitional value the food may have had.

Broccoli + frying pan + olive oil + lots and lots of garlic = SEX
Think while it's still legal.

I'm not putting raw carrot in my stew.

Then again, I like stew you don't really have to chew.

TWICE THE CLOGGED ARTERIES AND LESS CHEWING!

Especially if they're soggy in some sort of honey sauce. Awful!

Carrots can only be cooked if still crisp, and even then, it is only to lend flavour. Generally, carrots are not to be cooked.

But this is in the real world. This 'civilization' people talk about is utter crap.

I love homegrown carrots, they are so huge and so awesome. I want them now.
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

It only depends on how long you microwave. Inherently it doesn't destroy any more nutrients than ordinary cooking. Microwaving is often a short process, and in those cases it will destroy less.

I have to say that hard, uncooked pieces of carrot in an otherwise soft food is not a nice thing. However, in general I agree with everybody here: Carrot and many other vegetables are much better uncooked.

Agreed, except for potato, which is to be cooked in any way possible to make it ever-more awesome.
I had a blog. It sucked.

I think the carrots will get cooked in the lake of fire and brimstone so you should probably go there if you want hot carrots.

Not really. They tend to be a lot sweeter when cooked. They lose their crispness.

Excuse me, friends, but carrots cooked with a juicy pot roast are delicious and do not lose any flavor; in fact, they gain flavor from stewing in the juices of the meat. FTW.

Hardly. You're totally exaggerating. They lose a good deal, but not all.

Sol said this, they lose ~80% of Vitamons and other nutrional things.
2006-02-27, 5:43 AM #32
Humans cannot digest cellulose, which includes a significant proportion of plant matter. We have a difficult time breaking our way into plant cells. When you properly steam vegetables the cell walls are compromized so your body can access much more of the vitamins and nutrients stored in it.

Boiling vegetables leeches this nutritionaliciousness into the water. Boiling is bad, but steamed veggies are better for you.

Ahh that's true. The the meat gets some of the carrot flavor, so it all evens out.
