There isn't going to be one. 6 Years was way to long to make a game. Instead, Half-Life 2: Episode 1, and other episodes on the Source engine will come out.

Quote:
Even more crucially, there's further revelations on Episode One including Alyx's expanded role, whether Dog will make a reappearance and how the episode will address the big questions like "What happened to the Citadel at the end of Half-Life 2?"; "What happened to Breen, and is he dead?"; and finally "How does the G-Man factor into all of this?".

I'm still happy. I mean, it's the continuaton of HL2 with all the actors, and it shoud answer many questions about the game. Things should still work out good. I mean, do you really want to wait another 6 or MORE years just to find out the true story of HL and HL2?

episodic content ftw
Moo.

Meh, I might be mildly interested if it wasn't for steaming pile.

"Episodic content" is a marketing ploy designed to milk more money out of us than simply releasing sequels.

I, for one, will not bite.

I'll probably get those episodes someday, kinda ****ty that there won't be a proper game though. And then again, it's better than waiting for eons, except I've waited eons since finished HL2 in December 2004 or january 2005...

The only thing I don't like about this development, is that there won't be another HL game to push the boundaries of technology and moddability.
2006-02-27, 12:41 PM #11
I finished HL2 about 3 days after it was released. I was kind of angry that I ran through it so quickly. I should play through it again.

I have Doom9 installed into my brain.

Anyone can do it really. You just get a bunch of LSD, and leave the lights out.

I'm actually looking forward to that game.

Well... It will take them 6 years just to release each episode.

That was my worry when I read about their approach of episodes. How do you make a substantial upgrade of technology, much like the transition between HL1's Quake I foundation to HL2's Source engine, through small extensions?

On the other hand, I am glad that the expansions will be released much sooner than a new title, which could take years. I loved HL2SP (played through it twice) for the action and the physics puzzles, but I hope these episodes don't deliver simply more of the same.

Quote:
What new features and modes will Episode One introduce for multiplayer (any plans to include a Source-d TFC, for example)?

Robin Walker:Episode One will ship with Half-Life 2: Deathmatch and a Source-based version of Half-Life 1's multiplayer game.

HL1's multplayer game? Wasn't this deathmatch as well?

I was suprised that Robin Walker didn't mention Black Mesa: Source as a mod to be excited about.

I actually kind of agree. Every single post with HL2 as the topic, Brian seems to state his message of Steam sucking. Get over it.
2006-02-27, 6:19 PM #23
Steam hasn't ever given me problems, but other things have and I complain very often about them.

Episodic content is the work of modders - they should build a new engine and wow us again. Maybe they are already..

I know, Steam's not even that bad. I would think MMORPGs services were worst than Steam.

I'm not really saying it's invalid to dislike steam anyway, granted, I love steam quite a bit. I'm just saying that Brian's constant steam bashing has gotten to the point of anti-awp people, OS, or AOL bashing. Seriously, anti-fanboyism is really really annoying, and I'd expect different from Brian especially.

Come on, everyone has something to ***** about.

Liberals have Bush. Scientists have the Bible. Brian has steam. And we hear a hell of a lot more from the first two than we do from Brian.

I think the make or break point for episodic releases like this is going to be how much they cost. Meaning, will buying $50 wirth of episodes have the same amount of content as buying a full game?
Pissed Off?

Alright, I'm waiting to build my new computer to play HL2, but I do, honestly, hate Steam with a passion. The program seemed to hog my resources, and took forever to download things, like 10 kb/s when everywhere else it's up in the 80 range. When I was on dial-up, the online need (couldn't get offline to work, and you still needed internet to update/verify, which took 4 hours on 28k) was a pain, and seemed to be rather pointless. OK, sure, maybe preventing piracy a LITTLE BIT, but they seemed too paranoid since the big hack.

And then, I was really getting into HL1. Like, addicted. I'd beaten it before, but I just enjoyed it even more this time through. So I tried it on Steam, and thought that with satellite internet, it was the shiz. The auto-update, download mods, that kinda stuff. It's a cool idea, just executed poorly. Oh, and did I mention it borked over my HL1 files? I uninstalled HL1, Steam, deleted the folder, deleted everything related to it, reinstalled it, started a new game so I wasn't even using the same SAVES, and it still wouldn't run. That pissed me off, and I blame Steam because I did not do ANYTHIGN on my part, and I cleared everything Steam-related except for maybe Windows folder files off my computer.
I had a blog. It sucked.
2006-02-27, 8:29 PM #29
Really? That sucks. Steam has worked flawlessly for me so far in every way i can think of. Clean, fast downloads, easy to access, hides in the background when I don't need it, never screws with my credit card information. Wierd.
DO NOT WANT.
2006-02-27, 8:31 PM #30
Steam is only convenient some of the time.

Brians main argument against steam, if I recall, its not its performance. It was the how the game is distributed and its restrictions.
2006-02-27, 9:00 PM #31
I just wish they'd get the God-damn offline mode working. I wasted six hours at an auction that I would have liked to spend working on my map, but couldn't because there were no open WAPs nearby.

Offline works fine, you just need to run each game once after it updates, or something not convenient.

INCORRECT.

Offline has never worked for me. And I've run the game more than once after updates.

Meh, I have Steam in offline mode as I type, so I don't mind if I'm wrong.

For me to get offline to work, I have to disable my internet connection, which simply means unplugging my ethernet.
2006-02-28, 6:35 AM #38
Wolfy, are you enabling username and password persistance? Because if you don't have it set to log you in automatically, Steam won't work in offline mode. Also, I've found that the game design accounts don't work offline.
