VHS or DVD?
2006-02-27, 7:12 PM #1
I was staying at someone's house this weekend and was shocked/horrified to discover that they had VHS copies of movies as recent as Minority Report and Terminator 3. I think the most recent VHS I have is The Matrix, which I got in 1999.

I still buy some VHS tapes. Most movies that I REALLY like I buy on DVD, but if it's a movie that I like, but not enough to buy on DVD I'll just get it on VHS for like $2 at Blockbuster or something.
Think while it's still legal.

I bought "Six String Samurai" on VHS 3 years ago, because it's the best movie ever, and I couldn't find it on DVD.

SYNOPSIS OF THE BEST MOVIE EVER

Six-String Samurai is set in an alternate history America, in which Russia launched several nuclear warheads at the US immediately after World War II, reducing the United States to an inhospitable desert. The government has entirely collapsed save for the Kingdom of Elvis, who rules from Lost Vegas. As the movie begins, Elvis has died and all musical virtuosos are travelling to Lost Vegas to try to become the new King of Rock'n'Roll.

Buddy (Jeffrey Falcon), a Buddy Holly look-alike, is one of the musicians converging on Lost Vegas on the death of The King. Early in his travels he finds himself obliged to take care of a kid, named Kid (Justin McGuire). While Buddy resents having to look after the Kid, the Kid turns out to prove his worth in a few key situations.

Buddy comes across many people in his travels, ranging from a zombie-like, cannibal suburban family to the 'windmill people' who appear to be the remnants of the Area 51 staff, to the filthy tribals that make up most of the civilian population. He also combats many foes, including a samurai, a bowling team of bounty-hunters, a Russian surf band (The Red Elvises), and the Russian army laying siege to Lost Vegas. His greatest foe, however, is a sinister Slash look-alike who might be the god of death, and is dedicated to killing all his rivals for the title of New King of Rock'N'Roll.

I bought "Gladiator" on VHS in 2002. I believe that's the last time I purchased one.

But I haven't bought a DVD in the past few years either.

I went to a video rental store and they said VHS tapes aren't being produced anymore. Except for blank ones so you can tape TV. That made me sad. But I have purchased a VHS in the last four years. :) Horatio Hornblower is awesome.

I prefer D-VHS.
Ya know? Common sense? Not really that common...

I prefer DVD.

You can still sometimes buy VHS tapes at places like walmart for $5, (they have a smaller selection, but a lot of places do carry VHS) but to me that's way overpriced b/c the tape is prone to inevitable wear and tear and the quality is s*** to begin with. I wouldn't pay more than a dollar for a new VHS tape at this point in time.

I'm thinking that I have, but since I already had a PS2 in 2002 I don't think I have.. bah.

I still have to convert those hundreds of VHS tapes I don't have on DVD to DVD.

The last VHS I bought was Phantom Menace. Well, I haven't bought Phantom Menace on DVD... Somehow the inferior medium is just fine for an inferior movie...

The last time I bought a VHS was... tonight, well I guess last night now since it's almost morning. It was "Heathers" and was on sale. Last time I purchased a new technological toy when it was still new was the N64. Since then I wait till prices get low to bother. I know DVDs are higher quality, more durable, etc. but I'm just slow. :p

dude, if you dont have dvd yet, then get it now. you can get them for under $75 probably in the US (seeing as there are ones in australia that go for less than 100). and there is also the fact that the next generation of digital storage media has already been developed, and both of the competitors have already got companies lined up for production later on.

so, in other words, hurry up or dvds will be out of date before you even get a player.

Is it on VHS?

I own vhs and vinyl. I guess I'm stuck in the 70's. Even though I was born in the (late) 80's.

VHS at least managed to kill off Betamax. Has DVD- (in my view, the superior format) killed off DVD+? No. Moreover, the technology at its best (DVD-9 and up) has only become commercially available too late with HD-DVD/Bluray on the horizon - too little, too late and too expensive. For movies, DVD has made a difference, but for recording, it's VHS for the win as far as I'm concerned.

The newest film I own on VHS is What Lies Beneath.

A month or two ago, my dad bought The Day After Tomorrow on VHS. I was mortified. :(
