I, for one, am glad that the Iraqi people have been liberated from the oppressive regime of the automobile.

What is there not to get? People put bombs in cars, so you ban vehicles for a few days to curb the use of carbombs.

I'm assuming that's what is confusing you, or is there something else in the article that you were attempting to draw attention to?
2006-03-02, 4:01 PM #4
The way i see it is like banning guns.

They are killing you anyway so why do they care if its illegal to use what they kill you with?
2006-03-02, 4:04 PM #5
It's a whole lot harder to sneak a car past a checkpoint than a gun, Tiberium_Empire.
2006-03-02, 4:05 PM #6
But aren't these the people who will just say "Screw ill blow up the checkpoint instead"?

...which is what they do with the car bombs.

the point is not to get rid of car bombs, but to make the car bombs more obvious. i.e. if they ban cars form the curb, then it is a much safer bet that a car on said curb will be involved in something illegal. (other than just illegaly parking the car)

Bush is making two mistakes:

1) The Iraqis don't want peace. Well, they do, but not enough to do what it takes to have it.

2) It's not a democracy. We are not a democracy. There has not ever been one good democracy, ever. It's a Republic, numb-skulls! Also, all people are not the same. Some people just aren't responsible enough for our kind of government.

Oddly, I have to agree with at least one part of Obi's post -- though not necessarily his wording. We are, in fact, a Republic; not a democracy. There are no true democracies in existance at this point in time, to my knowledge. However, I don't believe that there was never a successful democracy. Athens was pretty damn good for the period in which it existed. Sure, it wasn't a true democracy in the absolute sense of the word, but it was relatively successful for quite some time. Its major downfall was the isolationist attitude of the various Greek city-states.

Ah well.

Iraqi people, for the most part, do want peace.

Its just the idiotic few, the religious hard-asses, who want things their way, and want to **** it up for everyone else.

While I am not a supporter of Bush, I must point out that Bush didn't make any mistakes. Bush was not mentioned once in the entire article

Yeah, the term democracy is an abused word. We should be using republic, a representative government. The founding fathers thought that a true democracy would lead to a tyranny of the majority.

The car ban could be economically damaging in the long run. Although the automobile is not as important in their society as it is in the states, it still is the common transportation mechanism, obviously. This ban might stop car bombs, but it does nothing to impede the deployment of IED's.

I think you'd find that most Iraqis rather dislike having their friends and families killed by IEDs, and would be willing to go to great lengths to stop it from happening.

Democracy is a common enough buzzword for self-determination. It's an altered meaning of the word, but it's here to stay, so you might as well get used to it.

Yeah, those Japanese and Koreans will never be able to institute working republics.
