Zen-off!
2006-03-07, 4:52 PM #1
Anovis and I were having a Zen off, and decided it should be brought to a thread.

Rules:
Your koan saying must be original
It must have something to do with the previous koan.
Try to keep it serious. It can be humorous, but don't get too silly.

Examples of Zen sayings:
If you immediately know the candlelight is fire, the meal was cooked a long time ago.
I only know a snowflake cannot exist in a storm of fire.
A tall man cannot hide in the short grass.
When an opportunity comes do not let it pass by, yet always think twice before acting.
Every year, leaves fall from the tree, and yet it still grows strong.
If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear, does it make a sound? It matters not at all whether the tree makes a sound or not. What is important is that it has fallen.
Your end which is endless is as a snowflake dissolving in the pure air.

Anovis and my conversation, to start you off:
[19:42] <happydud>If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear, does it make a sound? It matters not at all whether the tree makes a sound or not. What is important is that it has fallen.
[19:44] <Anovis> If Geb's candle wick is to be lit, then how will he obtain fire?
[19:48] <happydud> The closer man comes to obtaining fire, the closer man comes to enlightenment. Once it is beheld, the man is burned.
[19:48] <Anovis> The masters of fire have not yet learned how to master fire.
[19:49] <happydud> He who proclaims himself a master is a master of fools. He who proclaims someone else a master of lies. One who proclaims himself as existing is truly enlightened.

Start with the last example.

If one is truly enlightened, then they have mastered the art of existing, and is a novice to mastery.
2006-03-07, 4:57 PM #3
A novice once looked on as a master produced the most beautiful painting the monestary had ever seen.

"Her eyes" the novice spoke. "Her eyes are blue, not green."
The master looked, and behold: He had painted her eyes green.

That day the master realized that when one stops learning, he has strayed from enlightenment. That day, the master and the novice both became enlightened.

The paint brushes of life lies in the heart and the mind. Both opposing; one rational, one emotional. Both are needed to paint the grand picture.

Boo! The previous stuff so needs to be posted ;)

Quote:
< happydud > A spark lights a flame but the candle will only burn as long as the wick.
< Anovis > Have you not made a koan to call your own, dud? :D
< Gebohq > hey baby, I got a real LONG wick...
< happydud > Geb- Go burn it. :p
< Anovis > Just say somthing stupid and find wisdom in it.
< happydud > Anovis- Not yet. Someday.
< Anovis > hahaha
< Anovis > For example, a clock will measure time, but only your wife will measure your meal.
< Gebohq > happydud: as soon as I find a lady to light my candle, Rent-style
< happydud > zing!

As for a koan, this was meant to be in reply to happydud's original/first post:

One who follows himself, will look back on his life and find he has only walked in circles.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Sometimes one realizes it is not necessary to invent the wheel, but the circle.

There are many paths to Enlightenment, and many criss cross along the way.

If you cross over your own path several times, it is likely that you are not getting anywhere.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

But to get somewhere, both the beginning and the end are equally important.

One must learn how to quack before they are a madman.

I think it's "the Great Path". We both watch too much SG1 :(.

When a duck speaks, an ant hears a thunderstorm. When Enlightenment speaks, what do you hear?

[edit- I wasn't quoting SG1, but I know the quote of which you speak]

To a duck, a man babbles. To a man, a duck quacks.
To a sane man, a madman babbles. To a madman, a sane man quacks.

When a planet travels in circles, we call it orbit. When a man does it, we call it insanity.

(I forgot who said this -- wasn't me though.)
2006-03-08, 5:29 AM #23
Insanity is relative the the insanity of the person judging the insane.

Relativity is relative to those who are related to your relatives.

But what is a relation, more than an epemeral connection between material things?
